A Roadmap for Using the Newspaper in Today’s Classroom

6-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, Washington Public LibraryPractical and proven methods for enriching the classroom curriculum, raising test scores and building lifelong reading skills.Two veteran educators who credit their use of the newspaper in the classroom with helping achieve high MAP scores will share their ideas for introducing the newspaper, ready-made stations, mastering Missouri standards in a fun way, teaching that touches on all subjects, and more.Workshop participants will leave inspired and with resources in hand to get started.

My Life in Pictures:

Visual Storytelling with author/illustrator Deborah Zemke11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, Washington Middle School Library Deborah Zemke loves words and pictures — and letters! Join her in a hands-on workshop as she swoops through the Alphabet with Zeal to touch on the many aspects of making children’s books. Deborah will focus on making pictures that tell stories and using pictures to write stories. Participants will visualize, verbalize, brainstorm, make a book dummy, create characters, and write and illustrate their own accordion books, entitled My Life in Pictures. Handouts will be provided so that teachers can use workshop activities in their classrooms. A basket containing a signed copy of Bea Garcia: My Life in Pictures, 30 blank accordion books for classroom use, and other art and book goodies will be raffled off at the workshop.
