I'm amazed at how this school district and it's board members want to spend, spend, spend. Is anyone even considering how much this will cost the taxpayers of the district? Even at 1300 kids x $1500 per laptop, that's about $2 million dollars just in hardware. Then there's support contracts, possible theft, software costs, upgrades, insurance protection, new servers, infrastructure modifications, wifi upgrades, staffing increases. This is a fiscal increase that we don't need! It seems that many on this board want to spend like progressives in our political world. Just because we give students technology or a "digital" version of a book, doesn't make them smarter. It's still the same information just put on a nice digital world. Yes, the kids will have a lighter backpack going to school, but at the expense of the taxpayer. The taxpayer will just have a heavy backpack. Just the fiscal reasons should be enough to just say no.
Also, there is a distraction factor multitasking between apps and not really focusing on the class subject. Distractions on facebook, twitter, chatting with others during class. I've even heard of problems such as this from Borgia's implementation of iPads. How is that for better education? Cool factor yes, better education, doubtful. Certainly not cheaper.
On another note, parents are required at the beginning of school to bring in tissue papers, crayons, paper and extra supplies for each grade school student. Constantly families are bombarded by the latest fund raiser for common goods or improvements. And you want to spend at least 1 to 5 million dollars (at least) annually for such a convience? Show me the costs annually? Maybe you can give a bonus to the better teachers that are rewarded for excellence. Or give the high school band better equipment?
If this gets approved, we can look forward to paying higher taxes annually not just at the local level, but at the federal level in 2013. We all know the middle class will suffer more in taxes soon.
iPads or Laptops don't equal a better education! Better teachers make better education!
