With half of the weights open, St. Clair’s boys wrestling team still finished third Saturday in Ste. Genevieve’s duals tournament.

The Bulldogs defeated Owensville, 36-30, and Miller Career Academy, 36-12. St. James edged out St. Clair, 33-30. The Bulldogs also took losses to the second-place team, Dexter, 54-18, and the tournament champions, Ste. Genevieve, 30-15.

Despite the loss to St. James, the Bulldogs still finished ahead of the Tigers in the tournament due to a 34-25 victory by the Dutchmen against St. James. Owensville placed fourth and St. James fifth.

Dalton Thompson won all five of his matches in the tournament at 132 pounds, four of which were contested. He pinned Wyatt Parker (Dexter, 2:39), Tighe Bombach (Owensville, 1:51) and James Poelling (St. James, 0:25). Thompson also won a 4-2 decision against Jacob Dickens (Ste. Genevieve) and won by forfeit against Miller Career.

“A bright spot on the day was the performance of returning state medalist Dalton Thompson who defeated a district team state ranked wrestler for the third time this season,” St. Clair Head Coach Mel Hughes said. “Dalton has had a lot of success this season, as always, but has also experienced some disappointing defeats as recent as this past Thursday. It is typical of Dalton to bounce back after a tough loss and he did that once again at Ste. Genevieve (this) weekend with a solid performance in every bout of the day.”

Ryan Herman also went undefeated in the tournament, wrestling one match at 182 pounds and the other four at 195. He won by forfeit against Miller Career and Owensville in the 195-pound division and pinned 195-pound opponents Thomas Corliss (St. James, 0:38) and Luke Williams (Ste. Genevieve, 1:50). Herman also pinned John Tucker (Dexter, 3:17) in the 182-pound match.

Aaron Herman wrestled just one contested match at 285 pounds, pinning Clayton Vaughn of Ste. Genevieve in 1:18. Neither of the other schools fielded an opponent for Aaron Herman, awarding him the victories by forfeit in those matches.

Grant Bay was the 182-pound wrestler for St. Clair in all but the Dexter dual. He pinned Hunter Hutchison (Owensville) in 1:04 and won by forfeit against Miller Career and St. James. Ste. Genevieve’s Ty Brown pinned Bay for his only loss in the tournament.

The 195-pound match against Dexter was a double forfeit with Ryan Herman dropping down to 182 pounds for that dual.

Caleb Hooks was a winner by forfeit at 170 pounds against Miller Career. The Bulldogs forfeited that weight class against each of the other four teams.

John Davenport Cortivo wrestled at 138 pounds for the Bulldogs and pinned Earl Miller (Miller Career) in 3:07 and took a win by forfeit against St. James. He was pinned in the other three duals by Travis Wachter (Dexter), Kolby Jahnsen (Owensville) and Kaleb Myracle (Ste. Genevieve).

“Another positive was the effort and improvement that John Davenport Cortivo has demonstrated,” Hughes said. “John is a sophomore (and) first-year wrestler starting on varsity and has embraced the work it takes to be competitive at that level.”

Seth Banks (145 pounds) pinned Boston Belk (Owensville) in 1:03. Banks was pinned in the other four duals by Mason Keena (Dexter), Aaron Hayes (Miller Career), Nick Halbrook (St. James) and Grant Staffen (Ste. Genevieve).

Collin Thacker (160) won by forfeit against the Dutchmen. He dropped a 10-6 decision to Zach Achterberg (St. James) and suffered losses by pin to his other three opponents — Alex Townsend (Dexter), Isaiah Strong (Miller Career) and Andrew Wolk (Ste. Genevieve).

St. Clair did not field wrestlers at 106, 113, 120, 126, 152 or 220 pounds.
