Prosser Dodges

Union running back John Prosser runs around Owensville's Tristan Crofford on the way to one of his three touchdowns during Union's 49-14 homecoming victory over the Owensville Dutchmen Friday night.

UNION — Cutting through the Owensville defense like an informercial knife goes through a tin can, the Union Wildcats (5-2) breezed to a 49-14 win over the Owensville Dutchmen (1-6 at Stierberger Stadium.

Union only needed 50 seconds to score its first touchdown, a 77-yard pass from Blake Hulsey to Logan Bellamy on the left side. Bellamy was wide open and finished out the score with a long run. Ryan Schumaker’s kick made it 7-0.

After the Dutchmen punted, Union went back to work. The Wildcats had to overcome an offensive pass interference call, but were able to convert. Big plays by Hulsey on a run and a pass from Hulsey to Jacob Carman set up a four-yard strike from Hulsey to Bellamy with 6:07 left in the quarter. Schumaker kicked the extra point to make it 14-0.

After another Owensville punt, Union struck quickly with a 57-yard run by John Prosser. The score with 3:30 left in the quarter was Prosser’s first of three running touchdowns in the first half. Schumaker’s kick made it 21-0 in favor of Union.

After a Deric Purnell interception of a Jesse Lowder pass, Hulsey hit Bellamy for a 38-yard gain to the Owensville 12.

The Wildcats stalled there. On fourth down, Hulsey rolled right, avoided the rush, and scrambled left to find a wide-open Carman in the end zone for a 12-yard score with 1:05 left in the quarter. Schumaker’s kick made it 28-0, which is how the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the Wildcats continued to pressure. Owensville got a Drew Garner punt down to the Union four, but the Wildcats quickly drove back. A fumble gave the Dutchmen the ball again on their own 30.

That only set to delay another quick Union strike after the next punt. After Prosser picked up a long gain to the Owensville 17, he finished off the drive with a run up the gut from two yards out. Schumaker’s kick made it 35-0 with 4:04 left in the half

After another Owensville punt the Wildcats quickly struck for a final score. Prosser finished out the drive with a 15-yard run with 53.5 seconds to go in the half. Schumaker kicked the extra point to make it 42-0 at the intermission.

After stopping Owensville to start the third quarter, Hulsey avoided pressure and took a hit to complete a 61-yard touchdown down the left sideline. Schumaker’s kick made it 49-0 with 8:32 left in the third quarter.

The Dutchmen struck back quickly. Devon Dowler took the ball over the left side for a 73-yard touchdown with 7:36 to play. Drew Garner kicked the extra point to cut it to 49-7.

Union introduced a younger offensive group on its next possession and the younger Wildcats found it initially tougher to move the ball. That led to Union’s first punt of the evening.

Dowler returned the ball to the Union 10 and Jesse Lowder punched in on fourth and goal from the Union one with 1:49 left in the quarter. Garner’s kick made it 49-14.

At the end of the third quarter, Union’s Ethan Hughes ran down to the Owensville eight and that’s where Union started the fourth quarter, up 49-14.

However, that’s as far as Union got and Owensville received the ball back on downs at their own 12 with the clock rolling.

The game ended with no further scoring.
