WASHINGTON — Hurry up and wait.
That was the short way to describe Borgia 44-26 victory in the home opener.
Louie Eckelkamp ran for touchdowns of 22, 17, 55 and 59 yards to give Borgia (2-0) enough offense to stay ahead of a surging Union (0-2) squad.
The offenses did their best to scorch the turf at Borgia. Union’s took the opening kickoff 95 yards with just 14 seconds elapsing and the scoring surge was on.
By the end of the first quarter, the game was tied, 14-14.
The game took a turn midway through the second quarter. Matthew Sinnott led a group of Knights in a gang tackle of Union running back Matt Bray in the end zone for a safety, giving Borgia the lead with 6:49 left in the second quarter. Then, the game stopped.
The lights at Borgia went out. Lightning was spotted to the northwest and the game went into a lightning delay as everyone waited for the lights to come back on.
The lights came back and the officials paused for lightning. The players finally were allowed back and the scoring continued. Borgia scored two more touchdowns and Union added one to lead 30-20 at the abbreviated break.
Borgia hosts Tolton Catholic next Friday while Union hosts Sullivan.
