Four of the five fall sports varsity teams at Washington High School have played in jamborees leading up to their respective 2013 seasons.

Boys soccer, softball and volleyball all have three-year jamboree agreements with Rolla and Waynesville with hosts rotating each season.

The football team had their jamboree Friday at Borgia. The cross country squad does not have a jamboree.

Soccer

Washington traveled to Waynesville last Thursday for their soccer jamboree against Waynesville and Rolla.

Each team played a 35-minute scrimmage against the two other squads.

The Blue Jays split their games, losing to Waynesville 4-0 and defeating Rolla, 1-0.

Rolla reached the Class 2 state quarterfinals last season.

“It was a good night. We played pretty well. Both of our goalies, Dave Meyers and Jacob DeVore, saw action,” said Washington Head Coach Derek Schriewer. “We played mostly our newcomers and younger players in the first game against Waynesville. In the Rolla game, we played our older guys and veteran players.”

Sam Lenger scored Washington’s goal against Rolla.

“Our veteran players saw the mistakes we made in the first game and corrected them in the second game, which was nice to see,” Schriewer said. “Our defense against Rolla was very good.”

Schriewer said that midfielders Cameron Bunkley and Guenther had solid games against Rolla.

Washington opens its season in the Northwest/Parkway West Tournament Friday against Bishop DuBourg at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Northwest High School.

Softball

The Lady Jays played in a jamboree last Friday at Rolla High School against Rolla and Waynesville.

Each team played four-inning games against the other two. Scores were not kept.

“Kayla Pilgram and Brooke Smith both pitched two innings against both teams. They both did a lot better than I expected,” said Washington Head Coach Phil King. “We only gave up one walk in eight innings and there were only a couple of balls hit hard against them.”

King said the Lady Jays had a solid offensive showing.

“Our hitting looked great up and down the lineup,” King said. “With free substitution, all 13 girls got a chance to bat.”

Defense is something the team will work on.

“The only weak spot was our defense. We had a bad night communicating. We’ll get the kinks out,” King said. “Our defense is one of our strengths this year, so I’m not all that worried about it. Those eight innings were a great wake-up call for our girls to focus at practice.”

The top senior varsity returners are Courtney Kedroski, Kaelie Smith, MC Landolt, Becca Daugherty, Lilli Mantle and Abbey Martin.

Juniors Megan Freitag and Elanna Osthoff also are varsity returners.

The Lady Jays open their season Wednesday at home (Lakeview Park) against Eureka at 4:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Washington hosted a jamboree Monday against Rolla and Waynesville.

Each game started with a 6-6 score.

The Lady Jays defeated Waynesville 25-20, 27-25 and lost to Rolla 25-20, 25-21. Waynesville defeated Rolla.

“It was a good snap shot to see where we are and to give the girls a game under their belt to knock out the nerves,” said Washington Head Coach Kym Blankenship. “There were moments where we had strong attacks and great defensive efforts. I was a little disappointed with our serving and our serve receive. We missed four serves in a row at one time, which is unacceptable. We have to work those things out.”

The Lady Jays have 13 players on the varsity roster, which includes seniors Erica Diener, Kara Herron, Olivia Strode, Kelly Gauzy, Jessica Hamlett and Rachel Meyer.

Juniors on the roster are Jenna Barnhart, Emily Voss, Andrea Zoellner, Sarah Borgerding and Emily Scheible.

Sophomores are Paige Carpenter and Amanda Vollmer.

Washington opens its season Friday at home against Marquette at 5 p.m.
