It was the shock heard round the Ninth District.

Playing Friday in the Freshman Legion Ninth District winners’ bracket finals in Elsberry, Washington Post 218 handed St. Charles its first loss of the season, 6-0.

“The win Friday and the close nature of both games Saturday and Sunday shows me we can compete with anyone when we play our game,” Post 218 Manager Scott Forrester said.

Washington (26-8) advanced to the championship series with the win. St. Charles had to play Saturday in the losers’ bracket just to make it back to the championship series.

Eli Marquart held St. Charles to just two hits through the game. He didn’t walk any batters and struck out four.

Marquart threw 85 pitches with 60 strikes. He put his first pitch over for a strike 12 times and coaxed seven groundouts and 10 flyouts.

Offensively, Washington gave Marquart a big lift with three runs in the top of the first inning. Post 218 added a run in the third and two more in the sixth.

Washington didn’t get much against St. Charles pitchers Luke Meisner or Hunter Klein, either.

Meisner went three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit and five walks. He also hit one batter and struck out five.

Kline went four innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Offensively, Drew Piontek led the way with two hits and a run. He also was hit by a pitch.

Tyler Patton doubled, drove in a run and walked.

Matt Piontek singled, scored, drove in a run and stole a base.

Jacob Unnerstall had one hit, a run, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.

Zach Finley recorded one hit and an RBI.

Teddy Meyer posted a hit and a walk.

Nick Debeer had both of the St. Charles hits in the game.
