Volleyball Lady Knights Claim Silver Bracket in Springfield

At the end of the day, the Borgia volleyball Lady Knights raised the Springfield Classic trophy at Kickapoo High School.

However, that was the Silver Bracket championship plaque.

The Lady Knights (13-2-1) had hoped to be playing in the Gold Bracket across town at Glendale High School, but struggled in three sets during pool play which held the team back at Kickapoo for the second phase of the tournament.

At Glendale, defending Class 4 state champion Lafayette defeated Glendale for the Gold Bracket championship, 25-11, 25-12.

“We played some good teams and we definitely improved on last year’s performance,” said Borgia Head Coach Brad Bruns.

Borgia breezed past Carl Junction for the Silver Bracket championship, 25-14, 25-16.

“Overall, it was a good weekend and the girls played well,” Bruns said. “We had one match where we didn’t play up to our potential (Republic), but we were able to bounce back and clean it up.”

In the Silver semifinals, Borgia knocked off defending Class 3 state champion Westminster in two games, 25-15, 25-11. That was a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal match.

During pool play, Borgia started strong, but struggled in the middle.

The Lady Knights rolled past Camdenton in the opener, 25-10, 25-19.

In the second match against Class 4 team Republic, the eventual third-place finisher, Borgia fell, 25-18, 25-20.

In the third pool match against pool host Kickapoo, Borgia lost a close first game, 25-23, but came back to earn the split by winning the second game, 25-20.

That left Borgia at 3-3 in pool play. Kickapoo, which went on to take fourth place, won the pool with a 5-1 record in sets. Republic went 4-2, being swept by Kickapoo. Those two teams advanced to the Gold Bracket at Glendale.

Borgia, at 3-3, and Camdenton, 0-6, stayed at Kickapoo to play in the Silver Bracket along with Carl Junction, Westminster, Lebanon and Shiloh Christian (Ark.).

“On the offensive side, Emma Kriete and Audrey Arand had some great swings,” Bruns said. “Defensively, everyone stepped up at different times.”

Carl Junction

Borgia rolled to an easy victory over Carl Junction in the third-place contest, 25-14, 25-16.

Sophomore Emma Kriete paced the attack with seven kills. Freshman Audrey Arand was next with five. Senior Sarah Geatley and junior Jordan Kriete each posted three kills, senior Erin Hillerman contributed two and senior Janie Arand added one.

Janie Arand recorded 19 assists and had one ace. Emma Kriete and junior Alivia Brinker served one ace apiece.

Janie Arand had five digs to lead the team. Brinker posted four while Audrey Arand, junior Molly Arand, Emma Kriete and junior Maddie Toelke each had three. Jordan Kriete and junior Allie Marquart recorded two apiece.

Audrey Arand had three solo blocks. Geatley had two total blocks. Janie Arand, Hillerman and Emma Kriete had one block each.

Westminster

Borgia claimed a two-set title in the Silver semifinals against Westminster, the team that knocked Borgia out of the playoffs last season. Borgia won, 25-15, 25-11.

Audrey Arand recorded seven kills while Emma Kriete and Jordan Kriete smacked down six kills apiece. Janie Arand and Geatley each had three kills. Frederick posted two and Hillerman added one.

Janie Arand had 23 assists. Jordan Kriete served three aces while Audrey Arand posted two and Hillerman added one.

Janie Arand led the team with six digs. Jordan Kriete and Brinker each had five and Audrey Arand was next with three. Marquart posted two. Hillerman and Toelke added one dig apiece.

Geatley led the team in blocks with two solos. Hillerman, Emma Kriete and Jordan Kriete each had one.

Camdenton

Audrey Arand led the team with eight kills while Geatley posted five, Hillerman and Emma Kriete each had three and Frederick ended with two.

Janie Arand ended with 16 assists. Kriete served two aces while Audrey Arand and Janie Arand each served one.

Jordan Kriete had four digs and Emma Kriete posted three. Janie Arand and Geatley each had one block.

Republic

Borgia struggled against Republic. The Lady Knights were able to stay close throughout much of both games before Republic powered away late.

Emma Kriete led the attack with five kills. Audrey Arand recorded four and Janie Arand closed with two.

Janie Arand recorded 11 assists and one ace. Jordan Kriete served two aces while leading the team with eight digs. Janie Arand and Brinker had three digs apiece.

Hillerman had the team’s lone block.

Kickapoo

Borgia had difficulties against the host team to close out pool play. The Lady Knights needed a sweep to stay in contention for the Gold Bracket, but fell in the first game, 25-17.

However, Borgia pulled back to take the second game, 25-22 and finish 3-3 in pool play.

Emma Kriete led the team with five kills while Audrey Arand and Hillerman contributed three each.

Janie Arand had nine assists. Brinker led the team with three digs. Audrey Arand, Janie Arand and Molly Arand posted two apiece.

Geatley recorded two blocks. Audrey Arand and Emma Kriete had one apiece.
