Washington volleyball continued its undefeated run against Gateway Athletic Conference Central foes with a pair of home wins this week.

The Lady Jays (20-6-1, 7-0) swept Ft. Zumwalt East (10-13, 4-4) Thursday, 25-9, 25-12, to secure at least a share of the team’s 13th GAC Central championship and its sixth in a row. The team also defeated Ft. Zumwalt North 26-24, 25-18 (7-9, 0-7) Tuesday.

The Lady Jays have captured at least a share of the championship now f or six consecutive seasons. It is the 13th GAC Central Championship for the program dating back to 2002.

Washington can win the title outright with a victory next Tuesday at Ft. Zumwalt South.

Zumwalt North pushed Washington into extra points in the first set of the night Tuesday at Blue Jay Gym.

The Lady Jays had beaten Zumwalt North 25-12, 25-21 in a prior meeting this season.

“They were much stronger this time around at home than when we saw them in the beginning of the season,” Head Coach Kym Blankenship said. “Our girls started slow and (were) down 0-5 in the first set. We had a shank pass and three hitting errors on our part to start off behind. Once we got our servers going we were able to come back and battle. It was a close first game but I think it was because of the huge lead we allowed.”

Savannah Christian led Washington with 10 kills in 12 attempts and added five blocks and one dig.

Josie Kleekamp contributed five kills, five assists and nine digs.

Hannah Struckhoff led the defense with 13 digs and also recorded one ace and one kill.

Josie Kleinheider posted seven digs, two kills and two blocks to go along with one ace.

Alyssa Grant and Taylor Bauer had one block apiece. Grant added three kills.

Kate Freitag dug eight and served an ace.
