Opening the season Monday, the Union Swim Team Squids are prepared for the new Gateway Swimming and Diving League season.
The Squids open the season with a home meet against Washington starting at 5:30 p.m.
Union is being led once again by Kate Schroeder and Sarah Meiners as the principal coaches with Lexi Garlock, Autumn Garlock and Shelby Kiewitt assisting.
Union moves into the Gateway Swimming and Diving League’s Spitz Division, which includes all three area teams this summer.
Joining Union, Washington and Pacific are Cherry Hills, Oaks Landing and Arbor Oaks.
Union might have the biggest team among the three area programs with between 110 and 120 swimmers expected to be on the roster. That number includes at least 30 new swimmers.
“With so many new swimmers this year, we should be able to score more points in meets,” Meiners said. “It always helps to have more depth, especially for relays.”
The returners include some key members.
“Katie Melton and Aiden Garlock were our top male and female point scorers and they are both returning swimmers,” Meiners said. “Both are also great helpers with the little ones.”
Other swimmers in the 11-over divisions who return to lead the way include Mikayla Weber, Giesele Bolzenius, Emma Weber, Gabe Hoekel, Thomas Crane, Caleb Linton, Lily Schmieder, Sydney Gerdel and Addison Kriete.
Experienced swimmers in the 10-under divisions include Naomi Bolzenius, Katie Haberberger, Sadie Mueller, Blayne Dussold, Reagan Melton, Walt Bobo, Edward Weber and Fischer Hayes.
Union opens the season with three home meets with Washington (June 11), Cherry Hills (June 18) and Oaks Landing (June 25).
Union goes to Arbor Oaks July 2 and Pacific July 9 to close out the dual meet season. Meets begin at 5:30 p.m.
The division championship meet will be held Saturday, July 14, at Pacific. The meet starts at 7 a.m.
