It was another big step for the Union soccer Lady ’Cats.
Union (8-0) won at Rolla, 5-1.
“It was a good win for us,” Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey said. “They’re always a tough team to compete against, especially at their place.”
Rolla is in Union’s district and the win is the second against other Class 3 District 9 schools. Union also has beaten Pacific, but hasn’t yet played defending champion Washington.
“We knew with Rolla being a district opponent, this would be a score that would be looked at when we seed the district tournament,” Fennessey said. “They’re a little down this year, but they’re always a quality opponent.”
In Wednesday’s game, Union jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.
The Lady ’Cats added three more goals in the second half before Rolla scored on a penalty kick with 13 minutes left in the game.
Emily Gaebe continued her rapid scoring pace with three goals and an assist.
Hailey Cloud added two goals and an assist. Both goals came on penalty kicks.
Gigi Gore, Kaitlyn Hobson and Kennedy Reeser posted one assist apiece.
Lexi Garlock saved seven of the eight shots she faced in the game.
Union plays Helias Monday at Stierberger Stadium. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
“We’ve struggled against Helias, so it’s a big Friday night home game,” Fennessey said. “We’re looking forward to this challenge to see where we are compared to Helias.”
