St. Clair volleyball came within one win of advancing to the championship round of its own tournament Saturday.

After beating Warrenton (24-6) in pool play, 25-23, 25-22, the Lady Bulldogs (13-7-3) fell to the eventual champion Lady Warriors in a rematch in the semifinals, 12-25, 19-25.

St. Clair also defeated Union (3-18), 25-23, 25-19 and split with Summersville (12-11-4), 19-25, 25-21 in pool play and advanced past Union, 25-18, 25-22 in the first playoff round.

“It was a good tournament,” Head Coach Kandice McCuskey said. “We had our times when we looked really good and were moving and picking up every ball that came over to our side, but then there were times when we looked like we had no idea what was going on and the pace of the game drastically slowed down. We have talked numerous times about making sure that we take care of the ball on our side of the net and not giving easy balls to the other team. When our offense is on it is very difficult to stop because I have so many big threats.”

In addition to playing Warrenton twice at the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs lost against the Lady Warriors in two sets during the second week of the season and then were eliminated by Warrenton in three sets at the Seckman Tournament in mid-September.

The Lady Warriors went on to beat Summersville in straight sets to win the tournament Saturday.

“It was nice to beat Warrenton this year,” McCuskey said. “Last year we lost four times to them. This year we are at least 1-3 with them. It was nice to play against Union since we haven’t seen them yet this year. Summersville was a good and scrappy team.”

Two St. Clair players, senior Addison Schneider and sophomore Gracie Sohn, were selected to the all-tournament team.
