A beat-up Washington girls soccer team dropped a pair of GAC Central games during the week.

The Lady Jays (7-4-1, 1-2) lost Tuesday at home to Ft. Zumwalt East 2-1 in overtime and Thursday at Ft. Zumwalt South, 2-0.

Washington junior forward Halee Nurnberger, who leads the team with 13 goals, suffered a leg injury midway through the first half of the Ft. Zumwalt East game and did not return. She did come back to play against Ft. Zumwalt South.

Brianna Pagan, a junior midfielder, missed both games with an injury.

Ft. Zumwalt East

Visiting Ft. Zumwalt East scored seven minutes into the first overtime to win at Washington, 2-1.

Liz Brinkmann scored the Lady Jays’ lone goal on an assist from Nurnberger.

Mary McGilvray made 10 saves, playing all 86 minutes in goal for Washington.

“Mary played very well,” Lanemann said. “She made a couple of unbelievable saves that kept us in it.”

The Lady Jays were not able to take the lead in the second half or overtime.

“Even though the other forwards played well, you could really tell just how bad we missed Halee. Just like with Halee, we cannot afford to be without Brianna,” Lanemann said. “Zumwalt East is a good team and it was a tough task to play without Brianna and Halee, but I thought the girls did a good job overall. We made a couple mistakes that led to the goals. Against good teams like Zumwalt East, you can’t make those mistakes.”

Danielle Schmitz and Payton Williams scored for Ft. Zumwalt East (6-2, 2-1). Raechel Favuzza made three saves in goal.

“We dove in on the first goal and gave the young lady an open look and she put it away,” Lanemann said. “On the second goal, we lost our mark on the back post and they buried the game winner. My girls have a lot of heart and character, so they will fight through this adversity.”

Ft. Zumwalt South

Washington lost its fourth straight game to Ft. Zumwalt South (8-3, 4-0).

“It was a tough game for us. We had several injuries that affected our play,” Lanemann said. “Halee played and had maybe her best game. It was a real gutsy effort playing hurt and playing very well.”

Lanemann had high praise for McGilvray’s performance in goal.

“Mary had her best game as a high school goalie. One of the best I have ever witnessed here at Washington,” Lanemann said. “She kept the game from getting away from us. We just couldn’t really generate any offense. Zumwalt South’s first goal was scored on a penalty shot, which was a very questionable call. Their second goal was a laser and Mary still got a piece of it.”

The Lady Jays hope to get healthy soon.

“Brianna did not play again. We’re not sure how long she’ll be out. She is so important to our team. We miss her badly,” Lanemann said. “Arika Elliott had to play her fourth game in a row injured. Just like Halee, she played very well.”
