Three goals from Nick Schumaker was enough for Union to prevail in a Wednesday soccer match at Washington High School.

Schumaker’s hat trick led the Wildcats to a 4-1 victory over the Blue Jays.

“The energy and the desire Nick brings is what makes him so dangerous,” said Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey. “He’s been doing a much better job of being a controlling player, laying the ball off and making runs off of that. That’s what helped him get his first two goals tonight.”

Union (8-5) held a 2-1 lead at halftime and added a pair of goals in the second half.

“We came out with a different formation and I thought it worked out pretty well. We had a lot of opportunities and good-looking attacks,” said Washington Head Coach Derek Schriewer. “I’m really happy with the effort that the kids put in. It always seems like I talk about luck. At some point, it’s not luck, it’s something more than that. The bounces we get sometimes are remarkable, but we’ll just try to stay positive and move forward.”

Fennessey said defense was the difference for the Wildcats.

“The key for us was our defense. They got some good players over there. No. 13 (Cameron Bunkley) and No. 14 (Justin Schuttenberg) are pretty good goal scorers, and we slowed them down,” Fennessey said. “They got a goal on a free kick, which we didn’t look ready for. We weren’t set up the way we should have been.”

Schumaker scored in the eighth minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

In the 30th minute, the Wildcats made it 2-0 when Andrei Ciot scored on a free kick.

The Blue Jays (2-12-1) made the score 2-1 with 37 seconds left in the first half when Cameron Bunkley scored on a free kick.

“That was a good-looking free kick,” Schriewer said. “Cam is dynamite out there. He holds our team together.”

Schumaker added goals in the 56th and 65th minutes to seal the win for Union.

Dillon Breeden registered a pair of assists. Goalie Trey Fink had one assist, and made 10 saves.

“Trey made some good saves, including a nice one at the end of the game,” Fennessey said. “He’s been solid for us all year. This is his first year of goalkeeping in high school. He’s a good athlete.”

Washington was without its starting goalie as Dave Meyers suffered a concussion the night before against Ft. Zumwalt East.

Jacob Whitworth was in goal against Union.

The Wildcats capitalized more on its chances than Washington did.

“Colter (Bonnarens) and Justin (Schuttenberg) found their chances. They were just always contested,” Schriewer said. “We probably had more possession time in this game than they did. I like the way we’ve looked out there, but there’s always these lapses. If you have six lapses at this level, that’s four or five goals.

“We’re excited to have Justin Schuttenberg back and healthy. He had a quad issue last week. He probably had six shots tonight. When you give that kid six shots, you assume you’re going to get at least two goals. Koby Holtmeyer is a sophomore who we pulled up two weeks ago. I leave him out there for as long as he can play. He’s an iron man. I can’t take him off the field. Kyle Monzyk is a defender who is committed to the defensive cause and really tries to organize things back there.”

Union had defensive standouts.

“Curtis Bergner did a fantastic job. We had Dylan Pich and Dillon Breeden organizing out there. Tylor Brown was solid playing stopper. They all did a good job of picking up and switching when they had to switch,” Fennessey said. “It’s exciting to see the growth throughout the year. It’s just like a light switch went on and the boys got it. They’re really believing in themselves and their teammates.”

Washington won the junior varsity game over Union, 2-0.

Union-North County

Union earned a 5-2 win at North County Tuesday night.

The Wildcats outscored the Raiders 3-2 in the first half and added two more goals in the second.

“We played pretty well. One of their goals was on a penalty kick,” Fennessey said. “We had a number of different goal scorers and people with assists, so it was good to see us share the wealth.”

Schumaker led the way with two goals.

Alex Ciot and Channing Hunt each had one goal and one assist.

Andrei Ciot scored the other Union goal.

Tylor Brown, Scottie Ritter and Sam Sanders added assists.

Fink made five saves in goal.

Washington-Sullivan

The Blue Jays snapped a 13-match winless streak Thursday with an 8-0 home win over Sullivan.

“It felt good to get a win. The kids had a blast and played a good game. We moved and possessed the ball well,” Schriewer said. “Sullivan battled all the way to the end. A lot of teams wouldn’t have done that.”

Justin Schuttenberg had the hat trick, scoring three goals. Colter Bonnarens added two goals.

Aaron Meyer, Brian Nelson and Squire Holt each netted one goal. Whitworth registered the shutout in goal.

Washington defeated Sullivan in the JV game, 3-0.

Washington-FZE

The Blue Jays (0-5 in the GAC Central) lost Tuesday at Ft. Zumwalt East, 7-0.

“We got outplayed,” Schriewer said. “It was 2-0 at halftime, a close game, and we gave up a goal in the first minute of the second half. From there, the heads dropped.”
