This time, Spencer Juergens came out on the winning side.

Juergens, who threw seven shutout innings for the Washington Post 218 Seniors (7-3, 5-3) against West in a 1-0 loss last Friday, picked up a 3-0 victory over Daniel Boone Wednesday at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field.

“Spencer came out looking strong and looked to get stronger throughout the game,” Coach Ben Cassat said. “The other coaches and I had every intention of letting him finish the game, but a prolonged eighth inning set him over the pitch limit that we had in mind for him.”

Washington’s Thursday game at Warrenton was rained out.

Tournament Action

On Wednesday, Post 218 recorded a 3-0 victory over Daniel Boone at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field.

It’s tournament time for the Post 218 Seniors. Washington plays this weekend in the Festus Tournament with these scheduled games:

• Friday versus Mid-Illinois Bears at West City Park, 8 p.m.;

• Saturday at noon against Festus at West City Park;

• Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Fairview Heights, Ill., at 2:30 p.m.; and

• Sunday at 10 a.m. at Jefferson College in Hillsboro against Gonzales.

Washington then is idle until starting play in its own tournament Wednesday.

Pool games are against:

• Thoman Boothe Wednesday at Ronsick Field at 9:30 a.m.;

• Farmington Thursday at Borgia at 11 a.m.; and

• Mayfield, Ky., Friday at Ronsick Field at 7:30 p.m.

Playoff games will run Saturday and Sunday. Washington will have at least one additional game depending upon where it finishes in the pool.

Daniel Boone

The story of the game was Juergens, who went eight innings. He allowed four hits and two walks while fanning seven Daniel Boone batters.

“Tanner (Kulpa) threw well for us, and normally when we hold an opponent to three runs I really like our chances to put up a W,” Post 262 Manager Scott Horace said. “In this case, we just have to tip our cap to Spencer. He was very effective getting ahead in the count and not allowing the one hit that we needed that would have made a difference for us.”

Juergens needed 119 pitches with 80 of them in the strike zone. He threw 14 groundouts with only one flyout. He was able to get his first pitch over for a strike against 25 of the 31 batters he faced.

Justin Schuler came in to finish out the game, allowing a walk, but striking out two.

“Justin Schuler came in and got the save, walking one and striking out two,” Cassat said.

Washington needed every bit of that pitching domination as Post 218 only managed five hits against Daniel Boone pitchers.

“We only had five hits, but they had four,” Cassat said. “Our five were enough.”

Tanner Kulpa went 5.2 innings for Post 262, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out six, but was over 100 pitches when he was pulled.

Austin Forney pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and three walks. He struck out two.

“Both pitchers for Boone brought it pretty good,” Cassat said. “It seemed like they had some control issues from the stretch, which helped us get base runners around.”

The game was the second meeting in three days between the two teams and this game had been postponed from a previous rainout. Monday’s game was a 7-4 Daniel Boone win and was ended in the top of the sixth due to rain.

Daniel Boone threatened in the opening inning, but Washington held firm.

“We loaded the bases in the top of the first with one out and didn’t score,” Horace said. “That set a tone that carried through the next seven innings as we had chances but just couldn’t get that one hit that we needed to break the seal and get things rolling.”

Washington scored the only run it needed in the bottom of the first and added two insurance runs in the third. From there, both teams posted goose eggs on the scoreboard.

Seth Bollmann scored two of Washington’s three runs.

“Seth was impressive in the leadoff spot,” Cassat said. “He did not have a hit, but walked three times. That’s what you ask of your leadoff man. He also had a couple stolen bases that put the pressure on the Daniel Boone defense.”

Austin Finder posted two hits from the third spot in the lineup and scored the other run. He also had an RBI and a stolen base.

Washington’s other hits, all singles, came from Sam Katzung, Noah Borgerding and Aaron Meyer.

Katzung drove in a run and Borgerding added a walk. Meyer was the team’s designated hitter after arm soreness earlier in the week.

“Aaron Meyer had one hit in the DH spot after tweaking his elbow/shoulder on Monday night,” said Cassat. “That allowed some other guys to step up defensively.”

Mitch Hammack went into the lineup at first base and contributed two walks.

John Himmelberg added a walk.

“It was a total team effort and a great win for us,” Cassat said. “All in all, the highlight of the game was Spencer. If we can get outings like that from him all summer, we should be in good shape.”

Andrew Curran doubled for Daniel Boone. Forney, Kulpa and Eric Huenke singled. Curran also sacrificed.

Huenke and Tyler Horace reached on errors. Washington made the only two fielding miscues in the game.

“It should be a fun summer,” Scott Horace said about the Ninth District. “Any one of four or five teams could end up coming out on top of the standings. Whoever does will have earned it this year, that’s for sure.”
