Post 218 Freshmen Pull Away to Defeat Pacific Post 320

Holding the lead throughout the game, the Washington Post 218 Freshmen registered a 7-2 baseball victory over Pacific Post 320 Tuesday at Ronsick Field.

Post 218 (5-3, 3-0) received a complete game pitching effort from Kody Halmich.

In seven innings of work, Halmich allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

“We gave the ball to the player who is looking like our best pitcher, Kody Halmich, and he threw a complete game for us,” said Post 218 Manager Jordan Bierbaum. “We knew we had to bring our best game to Pacific, who was 6-2 coming into the game and can really play.”

Post 320 (6-4, 3-2) scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning and left the bases loaded to end the frame, helping Washington preserve a 4-2 advantage at the time.

Pacific also put two runners on base in the fifth inning and loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but couldn’t score.

“From the start, we weren’t ready to play against a quality program like Washington,” said Post 320 Manager Nathan Bruns. “We need to improve at the plate when we have runners on base. We stranded too many people.”

Both coaches praised Halmich for pitching out of jams.

“I was impressed with the way their pitcher worked under pressure,” Bruns said.

“Kody battled through a couple of tough innings. Our defense helped stop the big inning we were allowing earlier in the year,” Bierbaum said. “It was a big momentum win for our team and for Kody on the mound.”

Ryan Ray got the start on the mound for Post 320 and suffered the loss. In four innings, he allowed four runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

“Ryan struggled with his control a little, but otherwise did a good job. Coach (Jeff) Reed really stresses no walks with the high school team, so that’s something we work on with our pitchers,” Bruns said. “A couple of errors came back to haunt us. You can’t make too many errors against good teams like Washington.”

Tristan Longsdon pitched the final two frames. He allowed three runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Post 218 collected nine hits in the contest by seven different players.

Blake Pickard and Will Davis led the way with two hits apiece. Pickard also drew a walk and scored a run. Davis added one RBI and one run.

Cody Smith reached base twice with a hit and a walk to go with two runs. Joe Grant also had one hit, one walk and two RBIs.

Dan Diener, Nik Alferman and Garrett Leimkuehler each finished with one hit and one run. Alferman also had one RBI.

“After losing to Creve Coeur, we shook things up a bit and it seemed to work,” Bierbaum said. “Hitting was there when we needed it. Two-out hits with runners on base in the seventh inning capped off a good day offensively for our team. Dan Diener, Joe Grant and Blake Pickard all contributed in the seventh inning to give us the lead we were hoping for.”

Post 320 collected four hits by four different players.

Alex Westermann collected one hit and one RBI. Longsdon finished with one hit and one run.

Reid Dauster added one hit and one walk. Cody Rettinghaus had one hit.

Austin Muich scored a run. Zack Michalski and Ray both drew a walk.

Post 218 scored single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Alferman had an RBI single to score Smith in the first. Davis scored on an error in the second.

Washington added two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-0. Grant had an RBI walk to score Smith and Pickard later scored on a passed ball.

Pacific’s two runs in the top of the fourth came on an RBI single by Longsdon to score Muich and an RBI walk by Dauster to score Longsdon.

Post 218 scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to increase its lead to 7-2.

Davis had an RBI single in the fifth to score Leimkuehler.

In the seventh, Pickard had an RBI single to score Diener. He later scored on an RBI double by Grant.

“Pacific is a great team,” Bierbaum said. “We proved we can play with any team in our district.”
