Paced by two weight class champions, the Borgia wrestling Knights placed sixth in the Brentwood Wrestling Invitational Saturday.
Reid Posinski (132) and Dylan Hellebusch (145) were champions in their respective weights. Adam Hellebusch (113) and Braedyn Frankenberg (182) finished second as well.
“Everyone contributed today,” Borgia Head Coach Matt Posinski said. “It was great to see the young men continue to progress on the mat.”
Borgia ended with 100.5 points to place between Palmyra (fifth at 104) and Brentwood JV (seventh at 100.5).
Brentwood won the title at 202 points. Parkway West (176.5), O’Fallon Christian (141.5) and Hancock (109) were the next three.
Following the Brentwood JV was Gateway Science Academy (eighth at 53.5), Herculaneum (52.5), Valle Catholic (45.5), Wentzville Liberty (44.5) and Orchard Farm (43.5).
Borgia’s JV team was 13th at 38 points. Bishop DuBourg followed at 26 points and the rest of the field consisted of Maplewood-Richmond Heights (24), Lutheran South (17.5), Bishop DuBourg JV (five), Hancock JV (four) and Palmyra JV (no points).
“The young men did awesome today,” Posinski said. “There was a lot of improvement from the team, especially the first-year wrestlers.”
Borgia now is finished wrestling for 2017. The next meet, a three-team event against the Jefferson City JV and Valle Catholic, takes place at the Wingbermuehle Activity Center Jan. 2 starting at 5 p.m.
Reid Posinski had a full bracket, starting with a 1:38 pin of Parkway West’s Hayden Stephens. In the second round, he pinned Benjamin Jones of the Brentwood JV team in 1:57.
In the third round, Posinski took a win by injury default over Maplewood-Richmond Heights’ Garrett Anderson.
Posinski needed overtime to beat Hancock’s Ashton Wynn, 8-6, to move to the title match.
Facing Brentwood’s Xavier Lane, Posinski triumphed by a 13-3 major decision to claim the title.
Dylan Hellebusch had a quicker route to the title. He moved into the quarterfinals and pinned Kevin Woods of Maplewood-Richmond Heights in 47 seconds.
In the semifinals, Hellebusch pinned Orchard Farm’s Brandon Siebert in 2:53.
In the title bout, Hellebusch pinned Parkway West’s Donald Griffin in 2:46.
Borgia had two others reach the title bouts, but finish second.
Adam Hellebusch went 3-1 in the event and also had a bye.
In the opening round, he pinned Louis Song of Brentwood in 1:46.
In the second round, Hellebusch needed 41 seconds to pin Adrian Rizvic of Gateway Science Academy.
After a bye, Hellebusch pinned Joseph Lause of the Borgia JV in 1:22.
The title match was a showdown of returning state medalists. O’Fallon Christian’s Jonathan Cochrum, third at the state tournament last year, edged Hellebusch, sixth last year, by a 2-1 decision.
Frankenberg won four matches before reaching the championship bout. He pinned Orchard Farm’s James Seitzer in 5:24. Frankenberg then pinned Steven Ludwig of the Bishop DuBourg JV team in 59 seconds.
In the third round, Frankenberg won an 18-4 major decision over Hancock JV wrestler Benjamin Dixon. He pinned the Hancock varsity wrestler, Raul Carlin, in 4:57.
In the title match, Parkway West’s Jackson Barnhart pinned Frankenberg in 5:38.
Three other Knights placed. Thaddeus Isgrigg (195) was fifth. Dominic Dolce (160) took sixth and Luke Spaunhorst (220) ended eighth.
Isgrigg lost in the opening round by a 43-second pin to Hancock’s Davonte Trotter and then was pinned by Thomas Suntrup of the Brentwood JV team in 2:08.
After a bye, Isgrigg won his next match, pinning Liam Elli of Parkway West in 2:31. Wrestling for fifth, Isgrigg was declared the winner over Stone Corder of Orchard Farm by disqualification.
Dolce opened action with an 11-7 win over Orchard Farm’s Aaron Smith. He was pinned by Wentzville Liberty’s Jackson Ward in 1:02.
In the consolation bracket, Dolce again ran into Smith and won this time by a 15-5 major decision.
In the consolation semifinal, Herculaneum’s Drew Gibson edge Dolce, 11-8.
O’Fallon Christian’s Aiden Currivean pinned Dolce for fifth place in 3:38.
Spaunhorst was eighth in his weight class, but lost all five matches.
He was pinned by O’Fallon Christian’s Blake Ayers in 50 seconds, Bishop DuBourg’s Dominic Ruggeri in 2:30, by Valle Catholic’s Jacob Bieser in 1:49, Brentwood JV’s Tristan Jones in 1:02 and Ruggeri again in 3:10.
Borgia’s other two varsity wrestlers each lost their two contested bouts. Brynner Frankenberg (152) lost by a technical fall and a pin. Tommy Fortner was pinned twice.
Borgia JV had three wrestlers and two, Lause and Garrett Posinski (132), placed fourth. Grant Straatmann (145) was fifth.
Lause was edged by Rizvic in the first round, 6-4, before getting pinned by Cochrum in 2:50.
Lause’s lone win in a contested match came over Brentwood’s Luke Song in 3:10.
Garrett Posinski won three matches. He earned an 8-0 major decision over Herculaneum’s Tyler Cole, an injury default over O’Fallon Christian’s Gavin Blechle and a 35-second pin against Palmyra’s Isaac Stoner.
Losses were to Xavier Lane of Brentwood by a 9-0 major decision and a 10-1 major decision to Hancock’s Ashton Wynn.
