East Central College’s fall sports season officially came to a close Saturday in Lee’s Summit.
The volleyball Falcons (16-17) fell to Northeastern Oklahoma, A&M in the NJCAA Division II District O Tournament semifinals, 25-10, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22.
“We did fight hard in sets three and four, but it took until the third set for all positions to get their job done,” East Central Head Coach Lisa Mathes-Peters said. “We did do well defensively and passing-wise the whole match but our second and third contacts were not executed consistently until the third set. NEO did not make many errors and we gave up too many.”
The Falcons found their form in the third game and made the fourth one close as well, but couldn’t gather enough momentum to force a deciding fifth game.
Northeastern Oklahoma A&M then swept host MCC-Longview to win the championship and advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.
For East Central, Cameron Hackmann (Hermann) was the kills leader with 12. McKenzie Struckhoff (Duchesne), Molly Kraus (Eugene) and Jessi Kelly (Union) each had seven kills.
Emma Borcherding (New Haven) ended with four kills while Lydia Klenke (Union) had two. Grace Goedde (Parkway West) and Janice Steacy (Jefferson City) had one kill each.
Goedde led the defense with 22 digs while Struckhoff had 12 and Klenke ended with 11.
Borcherding was next with eight digs. Hackmann logged six, Steacy posted five, Allison Skaggs (Washington) had two digs while Kraus, Klenke and Natalie Green (Francis Howell Central) each had one dig.
Hackmann, Struckhoff, Kelly and Green each had one block.
Steacy recorded 27 assists while Green ended with 10 and Goedde posted one.
The Falcons had no aces.
East Central had four players named to the NJCAA Division II Region 16 team.
Struckhoff was second in the voting on the all-region first team. Hackmann and Goedde also made the first team.
Kelly was named to the second team.
East Central graduates four sophomores off of this year’s team. Borcherding, Hackmann, Goedde and Struckhoff were second-year players this season.
