For the second year in a row, the New Haven Lady Shamrocks vanquished Elsberry to win the Class 2 District 5 title.
New Haven (16-9) won at Elsberry (16-11) Friday, 57-26, to advance to the MSHSAA Class 2 sectional round.
“We played a really good game on both ends of the court,” New Haven Head Coach Doug Peirick said. “On offense we were very efficient and were able to get good looks at the basket and finish. On defense we forced them into taking shots they weren’t real comfortable with and also limited the second-chance points. The girls played with lots of intensity and determination and we were able to come home with the district championship.”
New Haven advances to play South Shelby (20-8) in the sectional round at Hannibal High School Wednesday. The game tips off at 6 p.m.
New Haven’s senior-dominated team was led in scoring by senior Lauren Gerlemann, who ended with 18 points. She was 4-4 from the free-throw line and New Haven went 19-24 from the stripe as a team.
Senior Emily Scheer netted 15 points and hit one of the two three-point baskets. She was 10-12 from the free-throw line.
Both Gerlemann and Scheer reached the 1,000-point plateau this season.
Senior Kate Ruediger scored eight points with half coming from the free-throw line.
Seniors Emma Engelbrecht and Mackenzie Bauer scored seven points apiece. Bauer had the other three-point basket.
Junior Claire Meyer led the reserves with two points. Peirick was able to play his entire roster in the game with sophomore McKenzie Overschmidt, junior Makenzie Munsinger, junior Claire Laune and junior Olivia Williams also able to see action.
