Getting a first glimpse at two Archdiocesan Athletic Association rivals, the St. Francis Borgia girls swimming team placed second in a three-team meet Friday.
Swimming in the late-night meet at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, Borgia scored 89 points to finish between the Lutheran St. Charles-O’Fallon Christian combined team (136) and St. Dominic (81).
“It was a late night at the end of finals week,” Borgia Head Coach Diane Jones said. “I was so impressed with how hard our girls pushed it this meet.”
While the meet title had been decided long before, second place wasn’t determined until the final race of the night, the 400 freestyle relay team.
Borgia’s foursome of Evie Alferman, Claire Birke, Anna Eckelkamp and Isabella Rio won the race to push Borgia ahead of St. Dominic for second. Jones said the team came from behind to win the race.
“They knew they were tied going into the 400 relay,” Jones said. “Both relays rose to the challenge. These girls are gamers, competitors, great team players. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
Depth played a role for Borgia.
“We only had nine swimmers there, plus with no divers, we left seven points on the table to St. Dominic,” Jones said. “So these girls knew they had their work cut out for them in this meet.”
The full event results were not available as of deadline.
Jones said she did not receive the final scoresheet.
Attempts to track it down prior to deadline were not successful.
