It’s one of the toughest events of the season.
And the St. Francis Borgia Regional swim Lady Knights were right in the middle of it.
The two-day CoMo Invitational took place Friday and Saturday at the Mizzou Aquatic Complex in Columbia.
Over 40 schools from around the state competed in the meet.
It’s a great experience for us to swim in this meet,” Borgia Head Coach Diane Jones said. “It’s an awesome facility and the fastest heats feature the best of the best of both classes in the state. It’s actually harder to medal at CoMo than it is to medal at state.”
Borgia did not score any team points, but had several top performances.
“Our attitude going in was to take in the atmosphere, swim our best races, and also make sure to watch elite swimmers perform,” Jones said.
Borgia’s top performances were posted by veterans, Jones noted.
Evie Alferman, one of the team’s captains, posted a time of 28.04 in the 50 freestyle to achieve MSHSAA state consideration time for the event, an improvement of 1.32 seconds. She placed 71st.
Junior Claire Birke achieved bests in both the 100 and 200 freestyle races. In the 100 freestyle race, she finished in 1:10.43, an improvement of 1.63 seconds. She ended 109th. In the 200 freestyle, she was 40th with a time of 2:09.32, improving by 1.76 seconds.
Junior Corinne Schroeder trimmed 0.13 of a second off of her best time in the 100 backstroke, placing 108th in 1:25.38.
Sophomore Elizabeth Simily was 99th in the 50 freestyle in a time of 29.31, an improvement of 0.22 of a second.
Sophomore Grace Fogarty had her best times in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. She swam 113th in the 100 backstroke in 1:29.71, an improvement of 6.36 seconds. She chipped 0.79 of a second off of her 100 breaststroke top time at 1:43.33.
Jones noted Lily Schmieder, Lauren Hellebusch and Gabby Mattli also had strong performances, featuring time drops.
Freshman Isabella Rio came back from the flu to swim in the meet. She finished 37th in the 500 freestyle in 6:05.57.
Borgia’s 400 freestyle relay team of Alferman, Anna Eckelkamp, Birke and Rio finished 30th in 4:32.02
The 200 medley relay team of Rio, Simily, Eckelkamp and Alferman swam to 38th in 2:19.98.
Borgia’s 200 freestyle relay team of Simily, Diana Pfeiffer, Mattli and Birke was 40th in 2:09.32.
“Our tri-captains Diana Pfeiffer, Emma Fogarty and Evie Alferman did a great job navigating the team through a shared warm-up lane with Ursuline Academy,” Jones said. “They lead not only by their consistent high effort and performance, but by the leadership they provide.”
Borgia returned to action Monday at Parkway Central, looking to continue to show improvement during the new year.
“Overall, I was very pleased at how the girls performed, and how they were so supportive of each other,” Jones stated.
