For the second consecutive year, Washington’s girls basketball will spend holiday time at Visitation Academy.
The Lady Jays (4-1), who finished fifth in Visitation’s Christmas Tournament a year ago, will enter the tournament as the seventh seed this season.
Play begins Saturday at 10 a.m. Washington takes on the 10th-seeded Webster Groves (3-3) in the fourth game of the first round at 2:30 p.m.
The Stateswomen are coached by Josh Spuhl, who last year coached Pacific to third place at the tournament. Spuhl’s Lady Indians defeated Washington, 60-55, in the second round of the Visitation Tournament last season. It was Washington’s first loss of the 2016-2017 season and the Lady Jays’ only loss of the tournament.
Pacific will not return to the Visitation Christmas Tournament this season, instead playing in a tournament at Rockwood Summit.
In the second round, Washington will meet either the No. 2 seed, Edwardsville, Ill., or the No. 15 seed, Parkway South.
The rest of Washington’s half of the bracket consists of battles between the third-seeded Kirkwood and host-school Visitation and the No. 6 seed, St. Joseph’s Academy, against 11th-seeded Hazelwood Central.
In the other half of the field, the top seed in this year’s bracket went to Incarnate Word, which will tip off against the No. 16 seed, Ursuline, in the first round.
Coming out of that game, those teams will play either the No. 8 seed, Metro, or the No. 9 seed, Francis Howell in the second round.
Rounding out that half of the bracket are games between No. 4 Whitfield and No. 13 Nerinx Hall and No. 5 Parkway North taking on No. 12 Cor Jesu.
All teams will play four games with everyone playing for a place. Second-round games take place Tuesday, Dec. 26. The third round will be played Wednesday, Dec. 27 with the final round being contested Thursday, Dec. 28.
Games will take place at two gyms at Visitation Academy. Most games will be played in the Buder Gym, but several are scheduled for the school’s Marion Gym.
