It all comes down to this.
A Class 3 District 9 girls soccer title and area bragging rights are on the line Wednesday when the Union Lady ’Cats take on the top-seeded Washington Lady Jays in Scanlan Stadium at 6 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to the contest,” Union Head Coach Matt Fennessey said. “It will take a solid effort to beat them. Washington is a pretty solid team with a stout defense. They have a tough back line.”
The second-seeded Lady ’Cats advanced to the championship game Monday with a 5-1 comeback win over third-seeded Rolla.
“They were tough,” Fennessey said. “That was a big win for us. We had a lot of girls show up to play and everybody contributed.”
Ryleigh Grommet scored on a penalty kick in the seventh minute to give the Ozark Conference champions the early lead.
However, all that did was wake up Union.
Ella Keltner scored quickly after the Rolla penalty kick to tie it at 1-1. Mackenzie Kiewitt assisted on the play with the crossing pass in the 11th minute.
The Lady ’Cats kept rolling and took the lead when Gigi Gore scored on an assist by Georgie Bray in the 18th minute.
“Gigi made a great run down the wing,” Fennessey said. “We’ve been trying to get her to use her speed to make plays. She took a hard shot for the goal.”
Mariah Nowak assisted.
Union led 2-1 at the break.
Gore scored again with 12 minutes to play and that opened the floodgates.
The Lady ’Cats added a fourth a minute later when Abby Phillips found the back of the net.
Two minutes after that goal, Union made it a rout. Autumn Garlock tallied to make it 5-1. Gore earned the assist.
“That was the prettiest goal of the night,” said Fennessey. “Gigi sent the ball into the area and Autumn headed it into the upper 90 at the near post.”
Fennessey said goalkeeper Lexi Garlock made the saves she needed to make.
“She made a couple of big ones,” Fennessey said.
