When the final horn blew Monday at the Union Tournament, it was more than just a first-round win for the Kirkwood Pioneers.

Kirkwood, the top seed, vanquished Northwest in the opening round’s second game, 82-33. It marked the 300th career win for Kirkwood Head Coach Bill Gunn.

“I feel blessed to have had to opportunity to do something that I love so long,” Gunn said. “To me, a milestone like this represents so many others who I’ve had the opportunity to work with, and especially my wife Brandi who has always been so supportive. As I get older I realize the best part of my job is the opportunity to build so many relationships and that they exist long after our guys graduate.”

Gunn, who has been a head coach at Kirkwood, Northwest, Hillsboro and Cuba and an assistant at Jefferson City, made it two years in a row with a Union Tournament coaching milestone. St. Francis Borgia Regional Head Coach Dave Neier earned his 700th win last year in the semifinals.

In Monday’s other first-round game, Lutheran South defeated last year’s runner-up, Rockwood Summit, 64-48.

Area teams take the court Tuesday in the event. Second-seeded Ft. Zumwalt South plays Washington at 5:30 p.m., a rematch of a Gateway Athletic Conference Central Division game from last week at Blue Jay Gym. Ft. Zumwalt South won that night.

In the 7 p.m. game, third-seeded Union plays No. 6 Borgia. It’s the only meeting of the season between the two local rivals who are in separate districts this season.
