Inspired by her own recovery from injuries, Borgia senior soccer player Jenna Hellebusch has signed to play at Central Methodist University.

Hellebusch hopes to go into athletic training and Central Methodist has a strong reputation in that field. A big part of her interest comes from the adventure she’s had in the past year.

“I also broke my femur in grade school,” Jenna said. “That’s drawn me into athletic training with all of the physical therapy I’ve been through.”

CMU Head Coach Dan Schmidlin is thrilled to add Hellebusch to the roster.

“Jenna adds tremendous depth to our team,” Schmidlin told the Central Methodist University website. “She suffered a knee injury last year but is now fully released to play again. She is very excited to get back on the field and start training and playing games again. Jenna has great character and is extremely coachable.”

Schmidlin feels Hellebusch will rebound this spring.

“She is a skillful player and will have time to work on her match fitness level this spring with her high school team so she will enter preseason camp in great shape,” Schmidlin said. “We are excited about the enthusiasm she will bring to our team.”

Jenna knew about Central Methodist prior to deciding to go into athletic training.

“My dad (Jeff Hellebusch) went there for two years,” Jenna said. “I just visited there and really liked it. I decided that was the place for me.”

Last spring, Jenna was there as her older sister, Jodi, signed with Avila University. A little later that afternoon, Jenna scored the only goal as Borgia defeated Washington.

“That was probably one of my top highlights,” Jenna said.

Not much later in the season, she suffered a torn ACL in Borgia’s final home game.

It’s taken Hellebusch nine months to come back, but she’s ready to go again when the Lady Knights start training for the 2013 season.

Jenna has had a lot of good memories at Borgia.

“When we won the district my sophomore year, that was good,” Hellebusch said. “Being able to play with my sister was a positive.”

Jenna actually could run into her sister, Jodi, during the college season. Central Methodist plays defense for Avila.

“We’ll play each other,” Jenna said, trying to remain as diplomatic as possible. “It’s hard to say who will do better. She’s got a year on me. She plays defense and I play forward. We’ll run into each other a few times.”

Jenna’s season came to an end earlier than hoped when she suffered a season-ending knee injury just prior to the start of the district tournament.

Jenna plays club ball for International Soccer Academy in St. Louis. She missed this past club season due to her injury.
