Thanks to Hannibal Post 55, Washington’s road through the Ninth District Freshman Legion Tournament got a lot more scenic Saturday.
Hannibal, the third seed, upset No. 2 Washington Post 218 in the winners’ bracket semifinals at Wildcat Ballpark in Union, 4-2.
Things looked good early for Post 218, which took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Hannibal, a 12-11 winner over Sullivan Friday night, came back to tie it in the top of the third. And that’s how it stood until Hannibal rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth.
Washington got one back in the sixth, but that was all for the scoring.
Post 218 outhit Hannibal, 7-3, but couldn’t make the most of its chances. Hannibal added five walks.
Garrett Lillard went the distance for Hannibal, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Washington had the pitching shared between Logan Dieckman and Landen Byrne.
Dieckman took the loss, going six innings while allowing four runs on five hits and five walks. He struck out two and left at 100 pitches.
Byrne needed five pitches to get through the seventh inning without giving anything up.
Louis Paule had two hits for Washington. Sam Glosemeyer doubled. Sam Heggemann, Brayden Mayer, Jarrett Hamlett and Calvin Straatmann singled.
Glosemeyer and Jacob Lombardo scored the Washington runs. Paule had an RBI.
Hits for Hannibal were doubles by Mason Tharp and Caleb Young and a single from Charles Culp.
Brady Lehenbauer walked twice. Kegan Birck, Tharp and Culp walked once.
Birck and Lehenbauer stole bases.
Culp, Birck, Tharp and Lehenbauer scored runs. Tharp and Culp each had one RBI.
Hannibal moved to Sunday’s winners’ bracket final, where it upset top-seeded Union.
Washington came back through the losers’ bracket with wins over Elsberry and Warrenton Sunday.
