It was a matter of convenience.

Union defeated St. Clair in boys soccer action Monday, 5-2, on Del Rinne Field at Stierberger Stadium. The first soccer game on the field which was named Friday was part of the Hancock Tournament.

With the win, Union advances to play Thursday against either Gateway or Valmeyer, Ill. That game will be played at 5:45 p.m. at Hancock. St. Clair will play the Gateway-Valmeyer loser Friday at 5:45 p.m.

Isaac Boboc put Union on top in the 13th minute when he scored.

With 13 minutes to play, Isaiah Hoelscher netted his first goal of the game to make it 2-0.

Jack Wagnaar and Boboc each scored late in the half to make it 4-0 at the break.

Brinker was happy with how the Bulldogs responded in the second half.

“I feel that we came out flat-footed in the first half and gave up the first four,” Brinker said. “We made some adjustments at half-time and played them 2-1 in the second half in our favor. They had the better possession throughout the game but I thought we did better in the second half breaking up their play through the midfield and into our attacking third.”

St. Clair’s goals both came from free kicks.

“Eion Gratzer got two good looks at the goal from outside the box and made both of them count,” Brinker said. “The first one he bent around the wall and snuck it in on the near post.  The second one he hit off of the crossbar and Noah Richardson was there to head in the rebound.”

Hoelscher scored again for Union.

St. Clair’s Collin Thacker was in goal and he made 12 saves in the game.
