When in doubt, give the ball to Skyler Hutchison.

St. Clair got a run for its money against Owensville last Friday, but Hutchison and the Bulldogs made sure the final outcome was in their favor.

Hutchison, St. Clair’s senior running back, rushed for 336 yards, which broke his own school record, on 28 carries and scored all five of his team’s touchdowns in a 34-21 victory at Owensville High School.

“I didn’t think Owensville was a bad team going into the game, so I’m not surprised that they played well. Their offense got us a couple of times,” said St. Clair Head Coach Cody McDowell. “It was great to get a win. They’ve been hard to come by. We’ve been fighting it lately. The guys put a pretty good game together.”

During the nine-game regular season, Hutchison rushed for 1,715 yards, averaging 7.6 yards per carry. He has five games at 194 yards or better on the ground.

“Skyler had a 95-yard touchdown run early in the game, which helped his numbers,” McDowell said. “He always runs the ball hard. We’re going to ride him out.”

St. Clair (4-5, 3-3) finished seventh in the Class 4 District 3 standings and visits Four Rivers Conference champion Sullivan (7-2) in the opening round of Class 4 District 3 play Thursday at 7 p.m.

Admission at Sullivan will be $4. Children 6 and under are free. Halloween makeup, costumes and masks will not be permitted.

Owensville (1-8, 1-5) is seeded sixth in Class 3 District 2 and meets third-seeded Soldan (5-4) at Gateway High School in St. Louis Friday at 7 p.m.

Statistics

St. Clair accumulated 491 yards, all of which were on the ground.

Hutchison did most of the damage with his 336-yard performance.

St. Clair quarterback Collin Scott attempted just one pass, which was an incompletion. He also had a big night running the ball, finishing with 110 yards on 10 carries.

“We had five or six pass plays called. We had a big pass play called back after Collin was a foot past the line of scrimmage. There were also a couple of play-action passes that he tucked it and ran,” McDowell said. “Collin is a good runner. He manages what we do pretty well.”

Alex Miller carried the ball five times for 31 yards. Evander Spinks rushed for 14 yards on three attempts.

St. Clair’s offensive linemen in the game were Wyatt Wachter at left tackle, Lucas Magruder at left guard, Tony Busby at center, Mason Helton at right guard and Jake Oermann at right tackle.

Defensively, Spinks led the Bulldogs with four solo tackles and seven assists.

Branden Brown added four solos and one assist. Jacob Villalobos had three solos and one assist.

Magruder finished with one solo and six assists. Charlie Fuchs had one solo and five assists. Harley Love collected two solos and four assists. Colbie Viessman and Kevin Cox both had two solos and three assists.

Game Summary

St. Clair grabbed a 7-0 lead on a 95-yard touchdown run by Hutchison with 9:48 remaining in the opening quarter.

Owensville tied the game 7-7 with 6:52 left in the first quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run by Ben Angell.

Hutchison scored again on an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead with 2:55 left in the first quarter.

Owensville took a 14-13 lead with 10:52 left in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Jesse Lowder.

Hutchison and the Bulldogs struck again on a 12-yard touchdown run. He also scored the two-point conversion to make the score 21-14 with 9:58 left in the second quarter.

The Dutchmen came back again, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown run by Tristan Crofford to tie the game 21-21 with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter.

The back-and-forth score continued when Hutchison gave the Bulldogs the lead again on a 40-yard touchdown run to make it 28-21 with 1:10 left in the second quarter.

St. Clair led 28-21 at halftime and after three quarters.

The lone touchdown of the second half came on a 27-yard touchdown run by Hutchison with 11:26 left in the fourth quarter.

Sullivan Preview

Seventh-seeded St. Clair begins Class 4 District 3 action at second-seeded Sullivan Thursday at 7 p.m.

The two teams met in week four at St. Clair, won by the Eagles, 51-25.

Sullivan has won seven straight games after starting the season with two losses.

“I’m fine with playing against Sullivan. We’ll have to play well to have a chance, but we played well for about three-fourths of the game the first time we played them. We actually had the lead at one point and it was a seven- to 10-point game for most of the night,” McDowell said. “Sullivan has a very good team. They have a shot of doing big things. We’re going to give them all we have and see what they have for us.”

Hutchison rushed for 215 yards on 30 carries in the first meeting against Sullivan.

Eagles quarterback Justin Biermann rushed for 187 yards on 15 carries against St. Clair in week four. Joey Rigdon added 119 yards on 10 attempts.
