Borgia’s boys volleyball Knights picked up their first win of the season Wednesday.

The Knights defeated Fox in the Wingbermuehle Activity Center, 25-16, 25-18.

“It was a good first win,” Borgia Head Coach CJ Steiger said. “We led early in both sets and finished both strong. We haven’t played up to our potential since the Duchesne game until Fox.”

Steiger said ball control was a factor in the win.

“Our ball control was the best it’s been with everyone stepping up and playing aggressive instead of tentative,” Steiger said. “With improved ball control we swung at the most balls we have all year, which contributed to control of the match greatly. Both teams made runs and mistakes at times, but we limited our mistakes greatly and the few we had we’re mostly aggressive ones.”

Steiger said Ray Mauntel was Borgia’s best player.

“He brought the energy and focus that our team fed off of,” said Steiger.

Jacob Miesner was the kills leader with eight. Mauntel posted six kills while Josh Rohlfing had three and Noah Elbert and Will Poepsel each had two.

Eric Jankowski recorded 15 assists. Elbert had two solo blocks and a block assist. Jankowski had one solo and one block assist. Poepsel added a block assist.

Mitchel Mohesky, Mauntel and Miesner each had 10 digs. Zach Dickinson was next with nine. Jankowski ended with five, Poepsel had three and Rohlfing added one.

Poepsel, Mohesky and Jankowski each served one ace.
