By upsetting top-seeded Kirkwood Friday in the Union Tournament semifinals, the Borgia Knights gave their head coach a milestone victory.
Borgia, the fifth seed, advanced to Saturday’s championship game (7 p.m.) against sixth-seeded Rockwood Summit with a 61-45 win over Kirkwood.
The victory was the 700th for Borgia Head Coach Dave Neier.
Neier, however, was happier for his team, which put together one of its best all-around performances of the season to stun the top-seeded Pioneers. The win also gives Borgia the chance to defend its tournament title.
Borgia trailed briefly early in the game, but never looked back. The Knights led 12-3 after one quarter, 27-19 at the half and 39-31 after three quarters.
Seniors Hunter Mehler led the way with 19 points. Jacob Unnerstall scored 16 points with 10 rebounds.
Another senior, Eli Marquart, netted 11 points. Freshman Max Meyers scored nine points while senior Dalton Shust and juniors Brendan Smith and Will Elbert scored two points apiece.
