District Champions

Borgia's district championship boys and girls basketball teams pose together with cheerleaders Friday following Borgia's sweep of Hannibal in the Class 4 District 8 championship games.

HANNIBAL — The season will continue for the St. Francis Borgia Regional basketball teams.

Both the Knights and Lady Knights won the Class 4 District 8 titles Friday night, defeating the host school.

In the first game, the top-seeded Lady Knights (11-14) defeated Hannibal (13-13), 60-37. Grace Gettemeier scored 23 points to lead Borgia while Avery Lackey netted 17.

It was tied 8-8 after one quarter and Borgia was up 27-12 at the half. Borgia led 48-28 after three quarters.

In the boys game, the second-seeded Knights (16-11) rallied in the second half to knock off the top-seeded Pirates (18-5).

Hannibal led 21-15 after one quarter and 27-25 at the half. Borgia came back to lead 37-33 after three quarters and hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Alex Brinkmann led Borgia with 18 points.

Borgia’s teams will play Tuedsay in Troy in the sectional round. The boys will play at 6 p.m. against the winner of District 7. That district will be finished Saturday with McCluer playing St. Charles West.

Borgia’s girls will have the 7:45 p.m. game against the winner of the Incarnate Word Academy-St. Charles game. That contest is also being played Saturday.
