Winning at a tricky venue, the Borgia volleyball Lady Knights stayed in contention for the Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division title Tuesday with a 25-19, 25-18 win over Rosati-Kain.
Borgia (13-6-2, 4-1) has struggled on the road against the Kougars (2-17-1, 0-6) in the past, getting upset at that gym multiple times.
“We are using every opportunity we have to get us ready for the end of season, which is just around the corner,” Borgia Head Coach Andrea Beaty said. “Every game we have very specific and measurable goals, and every game we are getting better. These girls want it bad, and they are putting in the work to help get closer and closer to their season goals.”
Borgia’s AAA Large fate could be decided next week with two big league matches coming up. The Lady Knights host Notre Dame Monday and St. Dominic Tuesday. St. Dominic is the division leader at 6-0.
The Lady Knights also face Francis Howell Thursday on the road.
In Tuesday’s match, Rosati-Kain once again tested Borgia in both games, but the Lady Knights were able to prevail.
“We had a very good match against Rosati-Kain,” said Beaty. “After coming off a big game, full of emotions, on Monday night, I was very proud of them for keeping their focus for the Rosati match.”
Beaty said she knew there were certain challenges against the Kougars.
“No. 1 (Audrey Cage) on Rosati is a very talented and athletic player, so we knew we had to focus on putting up a good block and defense against her,” Beaty said. “We also knew that we needed to keep serving tough. Our serving is a big factor to our success. If you can serve aggressively and accurate, you can force a team to make certain plays, and you can also take out options for that team as well.”
Beaty noted that Borgia served 12 aces as a team with Kara Voss and Chloe Brundick each ending with four. Gabby Mattli and Ella Riegel served two aces apiece.
In the kills department, Martha Glastetter led the way with six terminations. Diana Pfeiffer was next with five while Abby Lynn posted four. Kaylee Parks and Grace Struttmann each had two kills. Brundick, Anna Eckelkamp, Lynnae Grus and Voss each had one kill.
Abby Lynn led the team with seven digs. Voss was next with six, Paige Lynn posted five, Riegel ended with four, Eckelkamp and Mattli each had three and Grus and Pfeiffer each added two.
Parks was the blocks leader with three. Pfeiffer, Struttmann and Voss each had one block.
Abby Lynn recorded 17 assists. Paige Lynn and Riegel each had one.
Borgia played without starting middle hitter Sophie Straatmann, who was out with an elbow injury.
