It was a girls weekend out for the Borgia cross country program.
Borgia competed only in the girls races at Saturday’s Hancock Invitational and Jefferson Barracks.
Borgia Head Coach Mitch Figas withdrew his boys from the Hancock meet due to projected hot temperatures. The boys instead will run at the Priory Invitational this Saturday.
“In heat like that, the risks far outweigh the benefits,” Borgia Head Coach Mitch Figas said. “The boys will race at Priory Sept. 30. I would have held the girls out too, but there were too many conflicts with the band festival and soccer tournaments to make switching the girls meet worthwhile.”
Borgia’s varsity girls ran in the 3A Division. The Lady Knights did not have enough runners for a team score. Helias won with a team score of 66. Herculaneum was second at 87 while Festus won a tiebreaker over Westminster Christian as both scored 99 points.
Owensville was the top area school with 146 points. Pacific placed 10th at 248 points.
Ste. Genevieve’s Sarah Moore won the individual championship in 20:17.6, 14 seconds in front of Herculaneum’s Nautica Stricklin.
Gretchen Overman was Borgia’s top finisher at Hancock. She placed 49th in a time of 24:37.2.
Abby Matt was Borgia’s other varsity runner, ending 89th in 29:33.7.
“The girls who did run struggled with the heat,” Figas said. “I think all of the girls had positive aspects of their races, but this is the time of the year where you want to start seeing fast times and we were not going to see fast times in those conditions.”
Borgia ran four in the 1A-3A junior varsity race.
Megan Spaunhorst was the top finisher, taking seventh in 24:49.6.
Meghan Moser ran 17th in 26:15.8.
Lexi Weber finished 52nd in a time of 29:26.8 and Abby Mueller ran 67th in 30:57.8.
Festus won the team title with 20 points. Clayton’s Grace Morris was the top runner in 23:27.9.
