With a tiebreaker deciding Pool B of the Four Rivers Baseball Classic, Washington ended up finishing in third place and hosted consolation games Saturday at Ronsick Field.

Washington, St. Clair and Festus each finished with 1-1 pool play records.

The tiebreaker was run differential, where St. Clair came out on top followed by Festus and Washington.

The Blue Jays (3-1) lost a 6-1 decision Friday at Festus.

“When you score one run, it’s going to hurt you in a tiebreaker situation. If we could have kept it a 3-1 game, we would have hosted the second-place bracket, but it didn’t work out that way,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “That’s just how the tournament is run. St. Clair is going to win a lot of games and Festus is going to get better and better.”

Washington cruised Saturday in the consolation bracket, defeating New Haven 15-0 and St. James, 13-0. Both games went five innings.

“Our kids did a good job bouncing back on Saturday,” Bray said. “We didn’t take either team lightly and just took care of business.”

Festus

Festus pitchers Stephen Moss and Jeremy Brown combined for a no-hitter against Washington.

Moss pitched the first five innings, allowing one run. Brown worked the final two frames.

Todd Hellmann scored Washington’s lone run, scoring from first base on a wild pitch.

“We had a hit-and-run called. The pitch was in the dirt, the catcher lost it and it went back toward the backstop,” Bray said. “Hellmann was almost at second base when the ball hit the dirt. Both the pitcher and the catcher went after the ball and nobody was covering home, so I just sent him home and he scored.”

Hellmann’s run made the score 2-1 in the top of the third inning after Festus scored twice in the bottom of the first.

The Tigers added one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Jared Walde pitched the first four innings for Washington and suffered the loss. He allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Zack Pointer worked the final two frames. He allowed four unearned runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Mike Reinhold and Derek Walters both drew a walk.

“We had our chances. It was a 2-1 game in the fifth inning,” Bray said. “Jared walked the first two batters of the game and they ended up scoring two runs in the first. He gave up only two runs and two hits. They had a couple of big hits.”

New Haven

Washington scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the second in the 15-0 win Saturday over New Haven.

Justin Schuler tossed the first four innings for the win. He allowed no runs on one hit with three walks and five strikeouts.

Aaron Meyer struck out the side to end the game in the top of the fifth.

The Blue Jays had 10 hits and drew four walks.

Brock Hopkins and Sam Katzung both were 2-3 at the plate. Hopkins also walked, had two RBIs and two runs. Katzung had one RBI and one run.

Dilan Bollmann finished with one hit, one walk and two runs.

Pete Coulter collected one hit, one RBI and three runs.

Luke Hasenjaeger registered one hit, one walk, one RBI and one run.

Walde added one hit, one walk, one RBI and one run.

Phillip Straatmann had one hit, one RBI and one run. Andrew Sumner finished with one hit and two runs.

Garrett Schoenfeld had New Haven’s lone hit.

Brandon Carey pitched the first inning and Andrew Schwentker worked the final three.

New Haven’s Austin Madden pitched a five-inning no hitter in the Shamrocks’ second game of the day, a 14-0 victory over Owensville.

St. James

Washington scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Meyer pitched the first three innings for the win. He allowed three hits, walked none and struck out five.

Austin Finder tossed the final two frames. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five.

Hopkins and Walde both finished with two hits. Hopkins added two walks, three RBIs and three runs. Walde also had a walk and three RBIs.

Bollmann recorded one hit, two walks and three runs.

Camron Shipley finished with one hit, one RBI and one run.

Alex Monehan registered one hit and one walk.

Hasenjaeger collected one hit, one walk and one RBI.

Katzung had one hit and one walk.

Kyle Summers scored twice and had one RBI.

Derek Walters scored two runs.

“We have 12 seniors on our team. We used this tournament to see what our kids can do, kind of like an audition,” Bray said. “We still have some moving around to do to see what works for us. We’re getting there.”
