Competing in one of the larger high school track and field meets in the St. Louis area, Washington placed second as a team in the girls standings Saturday at the Washington University Invitational.

The Lady Jays trailed only Francis Howell, the defending Class 4 state champions, in the final standings by a 99-87 margin.

Ft. Zumwalt South finished third in the 17-team field with 83.5 points. McCluer North placed fourth and Hazelwood West was fifth.

“The girls had some great performances. It was a great meet with Francis Howell, the defending state champions and the state cross country champions this past fall,” said Washington Head Coach Mike Olszowka. “It’s a good meet to see where the team is this early in the season.”

Washington’s boys finished 10th in the 18-team field with 33.5 points.

Saint Louis University High won the boys crown with 149 points, easily topping second-place CBC with 82 points.

Rounding out the top five were McCluer North, McCluer and Ft. Zumwalt South.

“Our boys team is coming along really well,” Olszowka said. “We continue to get better. We just have to stay healthy.”

The top eight finishers in each event earned team points.

Lady Jays

Washington had one individual champion with MC Landolt winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.8.

“MC had a great winter. She joined a club team and ran an entire indoor season. It wasn’t a shock to us that she won the 100-meter dash,” Olszowka said. “Not only did she get stronger, but she’s learned how to train and she uses that approach in every practice.”

Kirstie Leslie had a big meet with second-place finishes in the pole vault (10-0), long jump (16-5) and triple jump (35-3 1/2).

“It’s a great start to the season for Kirstie,” Olszowka said. “Her long jump and triple jump were about average for her. It’s early and she’s only going to get better.”

Megan Bauche placed third in the 300-meter low hurdles in 52.4 and fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.84.

“Megan was impressive. She’s full of guts,” Olszowka said. “This was only her fourth meet where she’s hurdled. She’s such a great athlete.”

Ashley Garrard finished third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:45.

“Ashley has competed in the steeplechase before and we knew she would do well,” Olszowka said.

Abby Stricker tied for fourth in both the high jump, clearing 4-8 and the pole vault, clearing 8-6.

Hannah Leslie was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:39.

Jenna Haas placed eighth in the high jump, clearing 4-4.

Washington’s 400-meter relay team finished second in 51.9. Running were Lauren Brinkmann, Sarah Brock, Emily Stricker and Landolt.

The 800-meter relay team finished third in 1:51.3. Running were Emily Stricker, Makenzie Straatmann, Brock and Landolt.

The 1,600-meter relay team was fourth in 4:23. Running were Hannah Leslie, Kirstie Leslie, Brock and Landolt.

The 3,200-meter relay team placed fourth in 11:00.8. Running were Erica Diener, Alex Ready, Hannah Leslie and Garrard.

Blue Jays

Washington’s Brenden Leslie finished second in both the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.2 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 42.4 and was eighth in the high jump, clearing 5-4.

“Brenden had a great meet,” Olszowka said. “Finishing second in both hurdle events at this meet is a great start for him.”

Alex Schull placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.4.

Ian Smith finished sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:06.

David Tutt placed seventh in the pole vault, clearing 11-6.

Brenden Leslie was eighth in the high jump, clearing 5-4.

Austin Subke finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 41-8 1/2.

Washington’s 400-meter relay team finished sixth in 46.7. Running were Jared Rennick, Michael Wadlow, Caleb Curran and Isaiah Stricker.

The 3,200-meter relay team finished sixth in 9:03. Running were Travis Elbert, Tate Kitchell, Bill Schneider and Smith.
