At the end of the day, the Borgia volleyball Lady Knights raised the Springfield Classic trophy at Kickapoo High School.

However, that was the Silver Bracket championship plaque.

The Lady Knights (13-2-1) had hoped to be playing in the Gold Bracket across town at Glendale High School, but struggled in three sets during pool play which held the team back at Kickapoo for the second phase of the tournament.

At Glendale, defending Class 4 state champion Lafayette defeated Glendale for the Gold Bracket championship, 25-11, 25-12.

“We played some good teams and we definitely improved on last year’s performance,” said Borgia Head Coach Brad Bruns.

Borgia breezed past Carl Junction for the Silver Bracket championship, 25-14, 25-16.

“Overall, it was a good weekend and the girls played well,” Bruns said. “We had one match where we didn’t play up to our potential (Republic), but we were able to bounce back and clean it up.”

In the Silver semifinals, Borgia knocked off defending Class 3 state champion Westminster in two games, 25-15, 25-11. That was a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal match.

During pool play, Borgia started strong, but struggled in the middle.

The Lady Knights rolled past Camdenton in the opener, 25-10, 25-19.

In the second match against Class 4 team Republic, the eventual third-place finisher, Borgia fell, 25-18, 25-20.

In the third pool match against pool host Kickapoo, Borgia lost a close first game, 25-23, but came back to earn the split by winning the second game, 25-20.

That left Borgia at 3-3 in pool play. Kickapoo, which went on to take fourth place, won the pool with a 5-1 record in sets. Republic went 4-2, being swept by Kickapoo. Those two teams advanced to the Gold Bracket at Glendale.

Borgia, at 3-3, and Camdenton, 0-6, stayed at Kickapoo to play in the Silver Bracket along with Carl Junction, Westminster, Lebanon and Shiloh Christian (Ark.).

“On the offensive side, Emma Kriete and Audrey Arand had some great swings,” Bruns said. “Defensively, everyone stepped up at different times.”
