Preparing for its home tournament Saturday, the Union wrestling Wildcats swept a quad Thursday night by beating Ft. Zumwalt East, Winfield and Principia in St. Peters.

Union defeated Ft. Zumwalt East, 48-28. The Wildcats got past Winfield, 48-24. Union rolled past Principia, 62-12.

“We had a great night of wrestling,” Union Head Coach Justin Cranmer said. “We have really turned the corner as a program and showed how exciting the future is going to be for Union wrestling. We are still without four varsity starters, so this season is only going to get better once we get to full strength. Our kids are really getting better and starting to understand how to wrestle a complete match and the importance of being focused in every match because it matters for our team goals and their individual goals.”

Ft. Zumwalt East

Union swept matches from 113 to 160 pounds, building up a gap which Ft. Zumwalt East couldn’t overcome.

Colton Faber (113), Tyler Pace (120), Jordan Nowak (126), Alexander Gaebe (138), Devon Fennessey (145), Cody Pace (152) and Jordan Weaks (182) won their matches by pins.

Nowak had the fastest pin for Union at 43 seconds.

Dalton Fennessey (132) earned an 8-6 decision. Jake Siddens (160) picked up a 10-6 decision.

Losing in their matches were Logan Meyer (170), Joe Lasky (220) and Hank Tappe (285).

Union was open at 106 and 195 throughout the night.

Winfield

Only three Wildcats won their matches by pins against Winfield.

Nowak, Gaebe and Devon Fennessey were victors by pins. Fennessey’s pin came in 35 seconds.

Faber, Tyler Pace, Cody Pace, Lasky and Tappe were unopposed winners.

Dalton Fennessey (8-6) and Weaks (13-10) lost by decisions. Siddens and Meyer were pinned.

Principia

Gaebe, Devon Fennessey, Cody Pace and Meyer pinned their opponents. Pace’s pin was the fastest of the night in 15 seconds.

Tyler Pace earned a 15-0 technical fall win at the conclusion of the second period.

Nowak earned a 5-2 decision victory.

Winning unopposed were Faber, Siddens, Weaks, Lasky and Tappe.

Dalton Fennessey lost by a pin.

Principia also took six points in an unopposed weight class.

“The whole team is wrestling tough and have really stepped up the intensity at practice,” Cranmer said. “They realize that this can be a special year for Union if they work hard and stay disciplined. It is exciting to see the wrestlers in the practice room pick each other up and push their teammates to be even better. They do not want to settle for average anymore, we all expect greatness out of each of them every day, practice or dual meet, conference opponent or state tournament.”
