For the second game in a row, a big inning sank the Washington Post 218 Freshman Legion team.

Washington (2-2) lost Wednesday to Jackson in the third-place game of the Washington Tournament, 7-4.

Jackson did most of its damage in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six times to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 7-4 victory.

“We had the one bad inning, where things just didn’t go our way, and lately it’s cost us the game,” Post 218 Manager Jordan Bierbaum said.

Washington, the visiting team in the game, came out with a run in the top of the first inning.

Each team scored once in the third inning and Washington added two more runs in the fourth inning to go up, 4-1. That held up until the bottom of the fifth.

Washington returns to action Saturday with a Ninth District doubleheader in Hannibal. The first game begins at noon.

Washington hosts St. Charles in Ninth District action Tuesday starting at 6 p.m.

Even in the loss to Jackson, Bierbaum was pleased with how the team played.

“We played a much better game than our last outing against Ballwin,” Bierbaum said. “Again, we seem to do the little things right at the plate. Cody Smith was slotted in the two slot, and was on base after every at-bat. He has shown he can handle hitting up in the order.

Smith was 1-1 with three walks, two runs and two stolen bases.

“We also left a lot of runners on base and had trouble getting the two-out hit that could have broken the game open,” Bierbaum said. “In the field we looked much better. Kody Halmich made some outstanding plays at third base in crucial situations which was nice to see.”

Daniel Diener had two hits to lead Washington in that department. He scored one run and added a stolen base.

Nik Alferman posted one hit.

Will Davis ended with one hit and a walk. He added a stolen base and scored one run.

Gus Kleekamp walked, drove in a run and stole two bases.

Blake Pickard drove in a run. Joe Grant and Halmich walked. Halmich added a stolen base. Garrett Leimkuehler stole a base.

Zach Marquart started the game and went three innings. He allowed one unearned run on six hits while striking out four.

Justin Repp followed and took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and one walk over 1.2 innings.

Jeremy Monehan pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one.

Creve Coeur defeated Ballwin to win the tournament championship. Washington defeated Creve Coeur in pool action last Saturday, 10-2.
