While the East Central College softball Falcons are still seeking their first victory of the season, the team is happy to be playing.

ECC (0-4, 0-4) followed Thursday’s doubleheader sweep by Jefferson College with another two Midwest Community College Athletic Conference losses Friday at Three Rivers in Poplar Bluff.

Despite the 10-9 and 8-3 losses, Head Coach Brad Wallach saw considerable improvement.

“We came out more like ourselves at Three Rivers and it was good to see such a quick turnaround against a team who had given Jefferson County their only two losses,” Wallach said. “That’s who I knew we were, but it was probably good for the girls to experience it instead of just hearing it from me, especially the freshmen.”

Wallach said the team is closing in on its first win.

“Overall, we made big strides within 24 hours and are looking forward to an opportunity to build off of this,” said Wallach.

The Falcons had two doubleheaders called off due to field conditions. ECC did not play Sunday at Central Methodist or Monday at Missouri Valley against the junior varsity teams from those respective schools.

And Tuesday’s home doubleheader against Mineral Area College has been rescheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Falcons host Missouri Valley JV Thursday at 2 p.m. and head to Nevada, Mo., Friday to play Cottey College at 2 p.m.

Three Rivers

The Falcons had their chances in both games.

In the first game, the Falcons scored once in the first and four times in the second before, taking a 5-0 lead. The host team scored twice in the bottom of the second inning.

ECC scored twice in the fourth and Three Rivers added three runs in the bottom of that frame, making it 7-5 in favor of Three Rivers.

The Raiders tied it in the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons scored twice in the sixth while Three Rivers scored once in the bottom of that frame.

In the seventh, Three Rivers scored twice to win it.

“We had them on their heels the entire first game but couldn’t hold on at the end,” Wallach said. “Chloe Galati (Borgia) and Haley Zenner (Dubuque, Iowa) each successfully executed squeeze plays. We hit the ball hard, and Abby Job (Warrenton) and Alex Adelsberger (Timberland) threw runners out at home. It was a fun game to be involved in.”

ECC had eight hits and three errors. Three Rivers rapped out 10 hits and had one error.

In the second game, Three Rivers scored four times in the bottom of the first. The Falcons scored twice in the fourth but Three Rivers added another run in the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth, the Falcons scored once to cut it to 5-3. Three Rivers added a three-run home run to seal the win.

“In the second game, Chelsea Bax (Fatima) did a good job of bearing down after the first inning,” Wallach said “She gave us a chance to get it back to 5-3 until the three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.”

In the first game, Julie Scheer (New Haven) pitched, going 6.2 innings while allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 10 hits and seven walks. She struck out one.

Scheer and Kris Stevens (Union) had two hits apiece. Stevens homered, scored once and drove in three. She also stole a base.

Scheer doubled, stole two bases and scored once.

Grace Fritz (Borgia) and Galati each scored twice with one hit apiece. Galati also drove in a run, was hit by a pitch and added a sacrifice.

Zenner drove in three runs with a double and a walk. She also added a sacrifice.

In the second game, Bax pitched six innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits, three walks and one struck batter. She fanned two.

Stevens had two hits to lead the team. One of those was a double.

Galati, Sara Wade (Union) and Zenner scored the runs. Michelle Bryant (Crocker), Brittany Miller (Lindbergh) and Zenner drove in runs.

Bryant, Galati, Amber Odom (Linn) and Zenner also doubled.
