St. Clair opened the Hillsboro Girls Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 victory Monday over Maplewood.
The Lady Bulldogs (4-7-1) broke a scoreless tie on a goal with five minutes remaining in the second half.
Tori Martin scored the goal on an assist from Heather Pendegraft.
Sam Deason registered the shutout in goal.
“We played very well as a team from front to back. We did an excellent job possessing and moving the ball,” said St. Clair Head Coach Ted Koenigsfeld. “Once we got the ball to the 18, their defense was strong and their goalie made some saves. We kept battling and finally got a shot in with five minutes left to play.”
The tournament features eight schools broken into two pools of four.
St. Clair continues pool play action with games Wednesday against Perryville at 4 p.m. and Friday against Cape Central at 5:45 p.m.
The tournament concludes Saturday with teams with the same finish from the two pools facing each another.
St. Clair lost Saturday at home to Fatima in double overtime, 2-1.
Fatima scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of double overtime.
Martin netted the Lady Bulldogs’ goal on an assist from Nicole Nardi.
“It was a disappointing loss, especially to give up a goal in the final minute of the second overtime,” Koenigsfeld said. “The girls played well. We were down some starters and we had girls come off the bench and do an excellent job.”
