Tuesday will be a special day at Borgia.

That’s because the Borgia swimming Lady Knights will compete in their first-ever meet at Trinity at 4 p.m.

Borgia Coach Jennifer Alferman-Molitor said the team has been working hard to prepare for the meet.

“It has been good,” Alferman-Molitor said. “We shortened practices for finals but now we are hitting it hard. I know that it seems like we have been practicing forever but once we start with swim meets the season will start to fly.”

Indeed, Borgia will have two meets next week. The team swims at MICDS next Friday as well. The starting time hasn’t been announced, but likley will be 6 p.m. That meet originally was scheduled for Dec. 13, but that was called due to poor road conditions.

Borgia now has 16 swimmers on its team after taking a couple of roster casualties. The latest drop has been due to injury.

“The girls are doing well,” Alferman-Molitor said. “I am really impressed with how the new girls are picking up everything. My seniors are also doing really well. I think they are going to have a great season.”

However, those remaining with the program are eager for the season to get going, especially the team’s two home meets.

Borgia will host Lutheran St. Charles and O’Fallon Christian Saturday, Jan. 18, starting at 11:30 a.m.

And the second home meet will be Saturday, Feb. 1, against Wentzville Liberty at 11:30 a.m. Both meets will be held at the Four Rivers Area YMCA.

“We are very excited to host two meets and are very thankful for the YMCA for letting us host them,” Alferman-Molitor said.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball Knights will resume their season during the two-day Cardinal Ritter Classic in St. Louis.

Borgia is slated to play during Saturday’s portion of the event at the Cardinal Ritter Classic, a two-day event.

Borgia’s game is scheduled against McCluer South-Berkeley at 1 p.m.

Six games are scheduled for the event. On Friday, Cardinal Ritter plays Chaminade at 4 p.m. Cleveland Naval Junior ROTC takes on Crossroads at 5:15 p.m. and Priory plays Vianney at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday’s action starts with the Borgia-Berkeley game at 1 p.m.

SLUH plays Hales Franciscan out of Chicago at 2:15 p.m. and Cardinal Ritter takes on CBC in a JV game at 3:45 p.m.

Admission to the event is $12 and each fan will receive a program/ad book with their admission.

Berkeley enters Saturday’s game with a 0-4 record. The Bulldogs have lost to Riverview Gardens, Trinity, Madison and Bayless. The first two losses were by a combined 11 points. The last two were blowouts.

Borgia will have to find a way to slow down Ryan Stokes, a 6-3 junior swing player who averages 23.3 points per game so far. Cameron Nelson, a 5-10 sophomore guard, is next at 11 points per game.

Dion Fox, a 6-0 junior forward, is the team’s rebounding leader with six boards per contest.

The Knights are back in action Monday at home, hosting St. Charles West. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m.

The Warriors enter the game at 8-4 and have posted wins over Lafayette, Ritenour, Francis Howell North (twice), DeSmet, Parkway Central, Marquette and Parkway West.

Losses have been to Kirkwood (twice), Webster Groves and St. Charles.

The Warriors had a long run in the Meramec Holiday Tournament, going 2-2 in the event. St. Charles West beat Marquette, 45-28, and Parkway West, 55-46. St. Charles West then lost to Webster Groves, 52-48, and then to Kirkwood, 50-39.

The Warriors have played another neutral site game, beating Parkway Central at the St. Charles Family Arena Dec. 21, 41-36.

Logan Gonce leads St. Charles West in scoring with 17.4 points per game and is second on the team in three-point shooting.

Davis Soderberg is the top three-point shooter for the Warriors and averages 13 points per game.

So far for Borgia (5-2), sophomore Walton Eckelkamp has been the team’s leading scorer at 13 points per game.

Senior Zac Schweissguth averages 11.4 points per contest while senior Joe Helfrich averages 9.1 points per game.

Helfrich leads the team in rebounds with 7.1 per contest. Senior Kevin Birk is next on that list at 4.4 rebounds per game.

Schweissguth tips the team in assists (5.1) and steals (3.3) per contest.

Girls Basketball

Borgia hosted Bishop DuBourg Thursday in a game delayed from Dec. 13. Details can be found elsewhere in this section.

The game was Borgia’s first Archdiocesan Athletic Association Large Division game of the season. The Lady Knights are the defending league champion. Senior guard Janie Arand entered that game needing just five points to reach 1,000 for her career.

The Lady Knights (4-1) had a strong start to the season and ended the 2013 portion of the schedule by winning the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic over host Sullivan, 48-31.

Borgia will return to action next Wednesday, hosting St. Clair.
