A seventh-inning rally propelled Washington to the consolation championship of the Ft. Zumwalt North Baseball Tournament.

The Blue Jays trailed Ft. Zumwalt East 8-5 after six innings Wednesday afternoon, but scored five runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a 10-8 victory.

Washington (12-9, 2-6) concluded its GAC Central schedule Tuesday with an 8-2 loss to Holt at Ronsick Field.

Ft. Zumwalt East

Playing in the FZN consolation game, the Blue Jays trailed 6-0 after two innings, but chipped away with four runs in the third and one in the fifth before the five-run seventh inning.

“The seventh inning happened so fast. It started with a couple of walks and went from there,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “Aaron Meyer had a three-run hit off the fence. Pete Coulter shut them down in the bottom of the seventh.”

The third inning was highlighted by Zach Pointer’s grand slam home run. He finished the game with two hits, a walk, four RBIs and one run.

“Zach’s grand slam fired the team up,” Bray said. “It was the turning point for us.”

Andrew Sumner had one hit, two walks and one RBI.

Mike Reinhold collected one hit, one walk and two runs.

Scott Byrne added one hit, one walk and one RBI.

Pete Coulter registered one hit, one walk and one run.

Sam Katzung recorded one hit and one walk.

Aaron Meyer had one hit and one RBI.

Justin Schuler walked three times. Alex Monehan walked and scored. Todd Hellmann, Brian Trigg and Austin Finder each scored a run.

Washington used five pitchers.

Byrne was the winning pitcher. He allowed one unearned run in one inning of work, walking two and striking out two.

Schuler got the start, allowing six runs in two innings, registering four strikeouts.

Coulter and Meyer both pitched one inning. Sumner pitched two frames.

“We came up with a plan that we were going to rest some kids after our two games against Holt. We sat a lot of our starters,” Bray said. “With a revamped lineup, it gave us a chance to see how some of our other kids would do against good competition. The guys did a good job and played well.”

Holt

Holt (15-5, 7-0) wrapped up the GAC Central title with the win Tuesday at Ronsick Field.

The Indians’ ace, Josh Abegg, pitched the first five innings for the win. He allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Wyatt Fones and Nate Ketchum both worked one scoreless inning in relief.

“They threw their No. 1 pitcher, which I expected. We had chances. We had two guys on base in the first inning and didn’t get anything done,” Bray said. “We cut their lead to 4-2 at one point. After that, we just played poorly. We played pretty well against them in the game at Holt, but just didn’t have enough timely hits.”

Jared Walde was the Blue Jays’ starting pitcher and suffered the loss. In five innings, he allowed eight runs, two earned, on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Meyer tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Hellmann reached base four times with three hits (one double) and a walk.

Brock Hopkins finished with two hits (one double).

Katzung added one hit and one run.

Coulter drew two walks. Kyle Summers had one RBI.

The Blue Jays visit Sullivan Monday and host St. Clair Tuesday for 4:30 p.m. games.

Washington is seeded fourth for the Class 5 District 8 Tournament, hosted by Holt.

The Blue Jays meet fifth-seeded Hannibal in the opening round Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. The winner gets top-seeded Francis Howell in the semifinals Tuesday, May 14.
