Washington split a pair of baseball games Saturday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon.

The Blue Jays (9-5, 1-3) opened the day with a GAC Central loss to Ft. Zumwalt North 12-9, but bounced back to knock off Kirkwood, 8-5.

“Any time you can play on a quality field like TR Hughes, it’s great for our kids,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “We were able to play two games there and had some fun doing that. We’ve been rained out for the last few years there.”

Ft. Zumwalt North

After rallying from an 8-0 deficit to defeat Ft. Zumwalt North 10-9 last Wednesday, the Blue Jays were the ones who saw a lead slip away in Saturday’s contest.

Washington led 9-6 after four innings, but the Panthers (7-8, 2-4) scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning and five in the sixth to take the lead for good.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the top of the first inning, four in the second and two in the fourth.

Jared Walde got the start on the mound for Washington and suffered the loss. In 5.2 innings, he allowed 12 runs, nine earned, on six hits with seven walks and six strikeouts.

“Walde struggled at the beginning, then rebounded to throw OK,” said Washington Head Coach Scott Bray. “GAC teams can hit it and when you give free passes and extra outs, they can score in bunches.”

Kyle Summers recorded the final out of the sixth inning. He allowed two runs, one earned on three hits and one walk.

“Kyle came into a tough situation with the bases loaded and they hit him around a bit,” Bray said. “We had some chances to put it to them and never received the big hit.”

Sam Katzung led the Blue Jays’ eight-hit attack by going 3-3 at the plate with a walk, one RBI and one run.

Brock Hopkins reached base three times with two hits and a walk to go with one RBI and one run.

Pete Coulter finished with one hit, one walk and two RBIs.

Luke Hasenjaeger and Walde both added one hit and one RBI.

Dilan Bollmann walked, scored three runs and had one RBI.

Todd Hellmann walked and scored. Derek Walters drew a walk. Alex Monehan scored a run.

Kirkwood

Kirkwood (2-11) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Washington came back for the victory.

The Blue Jays tied the game 4-4 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Trailing 5-4, Washington put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.

Making his first start on the mound since his no-hitter and 17-strikeout performance against Warrenton, Justin Schuler tossed the first 5.1 innings to earn the win. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Aaron Meyer worked the final 1.2 frames to earn the save. He allowed no runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

“Schuler was up in the zone a little, but did not throw bad,” Bray said. “He wasn’t expecting to strike out 17 again, but he kept us in it and Meyer closed it out for us.”

Hasenjaeger belted a home run for the Blue Jays, finishing with one hit, one walk, two RBIs and two runs.

Bollmann collected one hit, one walk and two runs.

Hopkins added one hit, one RBI and one run.

Andrew Sumner had one hit, one walk and one run.

Brian Trigg walked and scored two runs. Katzung added two RBIs.

Jake Lowry paced the Pioneers with three hits.
