Just in the nick of time.

Artificial turf field installations at area high schools are nearing completion just in time for the start of the fall sports season.

Of the area schools installing new surfaces on their football and soccer fields, Union and Owensville host football games in Week 1 while Washington has a Week 2 debut for the new Scanlan Stadium/Rauch Field.

Washington

Finishing touches to the turf field and the track are under way at Rauch Field at Scanlan Stadium.

Byrne & Jones Construction is doing the work.

Work is expected to be completed in time for Washington’s first varsity football home game on Sept. 6.

“The field basically is done,” Washington Activities Director Bill Deckelman said Monday morning. “G-max testing is being done (Monday) to make sure the field is soft enough. It’s a safety issue.”

Work on surfacing the track was started Monday and will continue during the week.

“There are so many little things that you might not think of that has been done or still needs to be done,” Deckelman said. “They tell us that we’ll be playing on the field for the first home football game, so I’m confident that will happen.”

The installation of bleachers on the visiting sideline has been completed.

Union

Workers from ATG Sports continue to labor on getting Stierberger Stadium’s new surface ready for the opening game Friday, Aug. 30.

Most field work was completed Tuesday, including the end zones and midfield logo. It is expected to be wrapped up in the middle of this week, according to Union Athletic Director Chris Arand.

Workers were working on getting numbers put on the field at the end of last week.

Workers were scheduled to start on the entrance this week with the work expected to be finished prior to the opening game.

Concrete work has been done on the stands and finishing touches are being done on the press box and home stands.

Arand indicated the track may not be ready until after the first football game.

Borgia

Borgia’s baseball/softball field project is expected to start as soon as the Union project concludes as it’s being handled by the same ATG Sports crew.

It is hoped that the work can be completed by the start of the district softball tournament Borgia will be hosting in early October.

The project will only replace the infield with turf. The outfield will be left with grass. The scoreboard also will be installed during the project.

The Borgia track has been resprayed. Painting took place last week. The work was done under warranty as the original coat was not as thick as specified.

Owensville

Construction at Dutchmen Stadium is expected to be finished in time for Owensville’s home game against Borgia Aug. 30.

Work is being done by contractor Byrne & Jones of St. Louis, who also is working on Washington’s turf.

Sources reported the logo was put onto the field Monday.
