Coming back in the fourth quarter, the Borgia Knights made a hard run at trying to pick up a rare win at Vianney Friday night.
But the host Golden Griffins held on for a 42-41 victory.
With the loss, the Knights enter the Christmas break at 5-4 overall. Vianney improved to 7-2 with the victory.
Borgia came about as close as ever to winning a game at Vianney, historically a difficult place to win for the Knights.
Borgia trailed after one quarter, 13-11, but held a 25-17 advantage at the break.
Vianney came out hot in the third quarter and took a 29-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Senior Jordan Miller led the Knights in scoring with 19 points. He hit five three-point baskets while adding four rebounds and a steal.
Joe Helfrich and Casey Kuchem scored eight points apiece for Borgia. Helfrich added four rebounds, two assists and a steal before fouling out. Kuchem had six rebounds, four steals, two blocked shots and two assists.
John Baumstark added four points, four rebounds and an assist.
Zach Schweissguth netted two points.
Also playing were Kevin Birk (three assists and two rebounds), Tyler Breckenkamp, River Filla (one steal), Adam Meyer and Alex Moss.
Brad Woodson led the Griffins in scoring with 17 points while adding six rebounds and a steal.
Sean O’Brien posted a double-double for Vianney with 14 points, 12 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.
Tanner Cochran scored six points with six assists, four steals and a rebound.
Kyle Markway netted four points with two rebounds and an assist.
Keaton Wall scored one point with two rebounds and one steal.
Also playing for Vianney were Danny Baker (one rebound), Jordan Hardwick (one assist), JJ Mandina (one rebound) and Michael Witwer (one rebound).
The Knights next play Jan. 4 at St. Mary’s in an Archdiocesan Athletic Association tripleheader. Freshman action begins at 4 p.m.
