A win, a loss and a washout.

That pretty much tells the story for the Washington Post 218 Freshman Legion team this past weekend.

Post 218 (9-4, 6-0) defeated Elsberry Sunday at Rotary Recreational Complex - Ronsick Field, 8-2.

Washington fell Saturday to Ste. Genevieve by a 9-2 score.

The second Saturday home game against Eureka was rained out.

Elsberry

Washington picked up a victory in the lone league game of the weekend, beating Elsberry Sunday, 8-2.

Post 218 scored twice in the bottom of the first, once in the second and once in the fourth.

Elsberry scored its two runs in the top of the fifth trimming the Post 218 lead to 4-2. Washington scored once in the bottom of the fifth and three times in the sixth to secure the win.

Kody Halmich went the distance to earn the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out five batters.

“Kody Halmich again proved he is a top pitcher in the league,” Post 218 Manager Jordan Bierbaum said. “He shut down for the most part a good hitting Elsberry team and came up with big pitches when needed.”

Offensively, Trey Hunter and Daniel Diener each had two hits. One of Hunter’s hits was a double.

“Hitting and a little small ball got us the victory,” Bierbaum said. “Dan Diener has been efficient all year proving he can not only hit well, but bunt for a hit to get on base. Trey Hunter also had a blast over the center fielder.”

Garrett Leimkuehler and Joe Grant each had one hit.

Leimkuehler scored three times while Nik Alferman, Blake Pickard, Diener and Kolby Lang posted one run each.

“Garrett Leimkeuhler came to play today,” Bierbaum said. “He gets plunked in the head in his first at-bat. He stays in the game and comes up later in the game with a great at bat and singles to left. It takes some guts to do that after taking one on the ear. That’s the kind of play we need in big games like this.”

Grant and Lang drove in runs.

Hunter walked twice while Will Davis, Alferman and Pickard each drew one walk.

Lang added a sacrifice. Leimkuehler, Diener and Lang were hit by pitches.

Hunter and Diener each stole two bases.

Ste. Genevieve

On Saturday, Post 218 fell to Ste. Genevieve, 9-2.

“We knew as coaches coming into this game that we were in for a battle,” Bierbaum said. “They always play us well and they were the state runner-up last year.”

Washington scored twice in the bottom of the third, but the visitors took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth.

The visitors scored five times in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Offensively, Grant led the way with three singles while Hunter ended with a single and a double.

Tyler Miller and Chris Schwiessguth had one hit apiece.

Leimkuehler and Miller scored runs while Hunter and Grant drove in runs.

Leimkuehler, Hunter, Gus Kleekamp and Miller walked.

Alferman, Kleekamp, Dyson and Schweissguth stole bases.

“Offensively we couldn’t get the timely hits we needed,” Bierbaum said. “We did a good job of getting runners on base but we left too many. That compiled with some running errors and errors in the field cost us a game against a great opponent. When you give that team four or five outs in an inning they will beat you.”

On the hill, Lang got the start and went five innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out two.

“We pitched Kolby Lang and he was great,” Bierbaum said. “He kept us in the game and at times had their hitters off balance with his curveball.”

Jeremy Monehan threw one inning, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out one.

Justin Repp closed out the game, allowing one run on one hit over one inning.
