Washington needed three games to do it, but remained perfect in the GAC Central volleyball standings with a win Tuesday over Ft. Zumwalt North.

The Lady Jays (6-9-1, 3-0) rallied after dropping the first game to claim the home match, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15.

“Our overall record is not what we want it to be, but it’s cool to be 3-0 in the conference,” said Washington Head Coach Kym Blankenship. “None of our conference matches have been easy, so we’ll have to continue to compete well the second time around against them. We know we’re capable of beating everyone in our conference and have a chance to win it.”

Ft. Zumwalt North (4-2, 1-2) lost senior setter Mercedes Jones to an injury during the second game. From that point forward, Washington took control of the match.

“We were ahead by one point when she was injured. It’s not the way you want to have the advantage, but it was an opportunity, and we had to jump on it,” Blankenship said. “She’s the quarterback of their team. Our play increased from that point forward and their play decreased.”

The Lady Jays trailed 12-10 in the second game, but outscored FZN 15-5 the rest of the way to force a deciding contest.

The third game was tied 5-5 until Washington took off from there, going on a 13-3 run.

Serving runs by Kelly Gauzy and Sarah Borgerding helped the Lady Jays build an 18-8 advantage.

“We were flat in the first game. We may have underestimated them,” Blankenship said. “The girls did a good job putting things together in the last two games.”

Olivia Strode finished the match with eight kills, eight digs and two service aces.

“Olivia was on fire,” Blankenship said. “She played really well.”

Amanda Vollmer added five kills. Jenna Barnhart had three kills and Andrea Zoellner had two.

Erica Diener collected 20 digs. Paige Carpenter had five assists.

Emily Voss collected 17 assists, 10 digs and two aces.
