Opening the girls soccer season at the Warrenton Round Robin Tournament, St. Clair registered a 2-1 record and a second-place finish.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the event with a 6-1 loss Friday to Sullivan, but bounced back on Saturday with wins of 5-0 over the Warrenton junior varsity team and 1-0 over the Warrenton varsity squad.

The Warrenton JV team was added to the tournament after Wentzville Liberty dropped out.

Sullivan claimed the tournament championship with a 3-0 record.

“It’s good to get the season started and we’re happy about winning two games,” said St. Clair Head Coach Ted Koenigsfeld. “The loss to Sullivan was disappointing, but I was happy with the way we came back on Saturday.”

Sam Deason was in goal for all three of St. Clair’s games in the tournament, registering two shutouts.

Sullivan

The Lady Eagles jumped to a 4-1 lead at halftime on their way to a win Friday over St. Clair.

Morgan Spanos scored the lone goal for the Lady Bulldogs.

Emma Randolph had the hat trick for Sullivan with three goals.

Taylor Lucas, Skylar Evans and Ariana Evrard each scored one goal. Evans added two assists.

“We made some personnel changes and moved some people around after the game with Sullivan. With it being our first game, we learned more about our team,” Koenigsfeld said. “We made some adjustments and hopefully that will help us the next time we play Sullivan.”

The Lady Eagles also notched wins over the Warrenton varsity 2-1 and the Warrenton JV, 10-0.

Taylor Lucas and Randolph scored goals against the Warrenton varsity.

Evans had three goals against Warrenton JV. Also scoring were Taylor Lucas, Aley Lucas, Kate Randolph, Emma Randolph, Alexis Johnston, Brianna Keen and Jenna Lochner.

McKenna McCoy was in goal for Sullivan in all three games.

“You have to give credit to Sullivan,” Koenigsfeld said. “They have a lot of returners back from last season and have gotten better. They work well together as a team.”

Warrenton JV

St. Clair scored all five of its goals in the first half against Warrenton JV.

“We took our starters out of the game after halftime and let some of our younger players get some experience,” Koenigsfeld said. “We moved the ball really well in the first half and our communication was much better than it was against Sullivan. It was a good way for us to start the day. We built some confidence, which carried over into our next game against Warrenton’s varsity team.”

Emily Johnson and Kayla Barrett both scored two goals for the Lady Bulldogs. Anna Merseal also scored.

Warrenton Varsity

Johnson scored her third goal of the tournament with approximately 10 minutes remaining in the first half, which proved to be the game-winner for St. Clair.

Barrett was credited with the assist.

“It was a good win and a nice way to end the tournament,” Koenigsfeld said. “Our defense in the last two games stepped up and played well.”

Koenigsfeld said the Lady Bulldogs also received some solid individual performances.

“It was really nice to see Emily Johnson score three goals in our last two games. She worked hard in the offseason and has done a good job making herself a better player. We’re expecting big things from her,” Koenigsfeld said. “Kayla Barrett scoring two goals was impressive. She’s stepping up as a junior. Morgan Spanos is new to the team and is doing very well. Sam Deason made some good saves when she was challenged.”
