Rebounding from its first Ninth District loss of the season last week against Washington, the Pacific Post 320 Juniors registered road victories Friday over St. Peters, Saturday over St. Charles and Monday over Sullivan.

Post 320 (17-2, 13-1) won by scores of 4-1 over St. Peters, 12-2 in five innings over St. Charles and 15-0 over Sullivan.

Pacific allowed a combined seven hits in the three games, tossing a pair of two-hitters and one three-hitter.

Pitching against Sullivan, Tyler Straatmann struck out 17 batters for Pacific in the seven-inning contest.

“It was nice to come back and win some games after our first district loss,” said Post 320 Manager Cory Cowsert. “Our dugout was really quiet in the first five innings of the St. Peters game. Alex Rice got on everyone and that seemed to give us a spark in the sixth and seventh innings. That carried over into Saturday when we got after St. Charles pretty good.”

Sunday’s home game against O’Fallon was called off because O’Fallon did not have enough players. It has been rescheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m.

Pacific played Tuesday at Elsberry, hosts a doubleheader Wednesday against Central at 6:30 p.m. and has home contests Thursday against O’Fallon and Friday against West at 6 p.m.

St. Peters

Leading 1-0 for a majority of the game at St. Peters, Post 320 added two runs in the top of the sixth inning and one in the seventh to grab a 4-0 advantage.

St. Peters scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ryan Ray pitched all seven innings for Pacific, tossing a three-hitter. He allowed one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

“Ryan did a great job. He threw only 78 pitches,” Cowsert said. “For as young as he is, he knows how to pitch. He’s been around Ronnie (older brother Ronnie Ray) his whole life, which has helped. I think it motivates Ryan to show that he can pitch, too.”

Ryan Vogelgesang and Straatmann both collected two hits to pace Pacific. Vogelgesang added two RBIs. Straatmann also drew a walk and scored.

Tyler Gerling reached base twice with one hit and one walk.

Allen Fitzgerald and Ryan Howell both registered one hit and one run.

Bailey Watson finished with one hit and one RBI. Rice added one hit.

“St. Peters played really well,” Cowsert said. “We struggled at the plate early in the game. Once everyone got through the lineup, we had better at-bats.”

St. Charles

Pacific jumped to a 12-0 lead over St. Charles with four runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second and seven in the fourth.

St. Charles scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Howell tossed a two-hitter to earn the win. In five innings, he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with no walks, one hit batter and six strikeouts.

“Ryan had it dialed in. He threw only 53 pitches, 44 for strikes. He threw 17 first-pitch strikes to the 20 batters he faced,” Cowsert said. “Ryan is a very good pitcher. When he picks up his target early, he’s spot on.”

Straatmann was 3-3 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs. He also was hit by a pitch.

Rice was 2-3 with a walk, three runs and two stolen bases.

Howell collected one hit, one walk, one RBI and three stolen bases.

Drew Fonner had one hit and was hit by a pitch to go with two RBIs and one run.

Dalton Mathis registered one hit, two walks, one RBI and one run.

Will Pruden walked twice and had one RBI. Vogelgesang was hit by a pitch.

“It was a good game for us,” Cowsert said. “We took it to them early and never really looked back.”

Sullivan

Pacific cruised to a victory at Sullivan.

The story of the game was the pitching of Straatmann, who fired a two-hit shutout. He allowed no runs on two hits with no walks, one hit batter and 17 strikeouts.

“Tyler threw the ball very well. He pounded the strike zone,” Cowsert said. “He fell behind to only three or four batters. He threw 84 pitches and 68 strikes.”

No other details from the game were available at press time.
