Rigdon Rushes Past Raftery

Sullivan's Joey Rigdon stiffarms Borgia's Drake Raftery during action at Borgia Friday, Oct. 25. Sullivan won the game, 48-16.

Another week, another dominating performance for the Sullivan football team.

The Eagles (7-2) ended the regular season with their seventh straight victory, cruising to a 48-16 win at Borgia.

The Knights (5-4) hung around early, trailing 7-0 after one quarter, but Sullivan made big plays on offense, defense and special teams to pull away.

Borgia’s game plan was obvious, to keep Sullivan’s high-powered offense off the field by controlling the clock.

That strategy seemed to work for a while, but four turnovers in the first half hurt the Knights’ chances.

For the game, Borgia turned the ball over five times.

Sullivan also had a kickoff return and an interception return go for touchdowns in the first half, which limited the time the Eagles’ offense was on the field.

Borgia fumbled on its second play from scrimmage, which set up Sullivan’s first score, a three-yard touchdown run by quarterback Justin Biermann with 8:43 left in the first quarter.

The Knights made the score 7-3 just 10 seconds into the second quarter on a 22-yard field goal by Jacob Grellner.

Sullivan took over from there.

Joey Rigdon returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to make the score 14-3.

Matt McGowan then scored on a 60-yard interception return, giving the Eagles a 21-3 advantage with 6:36 left in the second quarter.

The Eagles struck again on a 20-yard touchdown run by Michael McDermott, making the score 28-3 with 5:52 left in the second quarter.

Sullivan led Borgia at halftime, 28-3.

The Eagles had the ball first in the second half and scored on a 25-yard touchdown run by Biermann, increasing their lead to 35-3 with 9:23 left in the third quarter.

Biermann’s night ended with 7:03 left in the third quarter on a 27-yard touchdown run, making the score 41-3.

Zach Holtz joined in on the fun with a 29-yard touchdown run, increasing the lead to 48-3 with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Borgia scored its first touchdown of the game with 1:02 left in the third quarter on a 17-yard run by Kelan Winters.

The Knights scored again with 2:37 left on a 14-yard touchdown run by Dylan Voss.

Biermann rushed for three touchdowns before leaving the game in the third quarter. Much of the Eagles’ starters joined Biermann on the sideline during the second half.
